Post by Flat 6 »

Hey all,

Just buying some original rear overriders that need rechromed.

Any recommendations on where to send them?

Cheers,

Al.

Hi Al,
I had mine done at Derby Chrome Plating. Superb job but it was pricey.
Kind regards

There must be a plater in Lreland?
However, I have used a company close to me, Castle Chrome in Dudley, West Midlands, UK.
Show quality in the 3 times I've used them.

Thanks Gents,

The overriders are in England anyway so I thought it sensible to get them sent straight to the plater rather than get them over here and probably send them straight back again to someone in GB.

Not aware of a good plater on the Island of Ireland - don't forget that there are only 6.6m of us here - not much more than the population of Greater Manchester! So there isn't the market to sustain a lot of businesses that seem commonplace in GB.

Hopefully someone will jump on soon and disavow me of this!

I have found what I hope is a good anodiser!

OK, just to prove myself wrong, there is a chrome plater near Belfast!

However, someone has said on a forum 'they only do plating, not hard chroming'...any thoughts on what they mean by this?

TJ Plating seem to describe a multi-stage process as I would expect to see it from my limited memory of watching chroming on classic car programmes...

Thoughts?

For your over riders you need a chromer who (really) does 'triple plating'

This means the stripped and polished steel part is instead plated with a flash of nickel, then a good plate of copper, polished, then plated with chrome.
Some skimp on the first 2 stages.
Hard chroming is a process used mainly for industrial application, such as piston rod in hydraulic cylinders and so chromed, the rod surface is particularly resistant to surface damage due to grit etc.

Castle Chrome only chrome, they don't do zinc plating or any other metal plating.
They will quote you if you send them good pictures of the parts so they can assess the labour to get the part right before plating.
They are always busy, quite a place to visit as some of the parts in there are rather special and almost all classic car parts.
It is all about the preparation, as with all surface treatments.

I did a fair with zinc players when I was at work. Plating zinc commercially is a skilled job to get anti corrosion performance v cost.
Chrome plating is a different kettle of fish.
I personally would go to a specialist rather than a plater who does everything.
I have no knowledge of the company you have the link to.

Finally, IMHO a good player is not cheap.
Hope this help.

if you dont want to be bothered and want instant gratification, i have a set of overriders that i bought from Karmann Konnection a couple of years back - originals that had been rechromed and with original rubbers. This was before i discovered I needed to have the ones on the car repaired and rechromed as i have a nerf bar which doesnt work with the standard overriders and rubbers.

If you are interested, pm me your email and i can send you some photos.

Many thanks Andrew but I have already committed to buy the other overriders and for some reason want to experience the process of having something rechromed - haven't done it before.

completely understand, am similarly afflicted.

I have used the company at the link below to rechrome my overriders, bumper ends, fog light housings and headlight reflectors. They were recommended to me by an Austin Healey/Jag specialist restorer who do a lot of chrome work and i have found their results to be of excellent quality. Not cheap and not quick but product is great. On my fog light covers, they copper plated to eliminate the severe pitting on the steel below the original chrome. They also do a good yellow passivation service to replicate the original bolt finish.
