Engine and head case numbers

Any chance someone can help pin down the engine case and rocker numbers?

The engine case is 901.101.101.7R. Is this from a 1972 car? Assume magnesium?

Similarly, the rocker number is 901.105.111.1R. Any ideas what this was originally? Many thanks.

Large numbers of head cases on here, probably most with engines too.

Firstly those are casting numbers.

However, that crankcase casting number identifies it as a magnesium crankcase - could be either from a 2.4 or a 2.7 model.

To narrow it down further you would need to tell us the engine serial & type numbers - stamped on the vertical & horizontal surface to the rhs of the fan housing.

And there’s likely a date stamp on those cases too which identifies the casting date to the month and year. I can’t show you a picture like Andys great illustration of engine and type number unfortunately.

As Mike said, there will also be a date code on the side of the case - just above the casting number already mentioned - see below for location & an example:

However, the numbers are quite small & difficult to see - especially if the engine is in the car - & is often obscured by oil/dirt ...

It is best if you provide both sides (901.101.102.xR) but with 101.7R I would expect 102.7R. There was a 101.5R/102.7R combo.
Earliest 7R is in 1973 that I know of. There are some rare aluminium cases with 7R. Best to know the engine serial & type #'s. The '73.5 case is the only 7R case manufactured with the 92 mm spigot diameters and that it was produced only for 6 months before the spigot diameter was increased to 97 mm. So there are some varieties of the 7R case.

I'll take a look this evening - and let you know the engine number and serial number. I'll also have a look and see if I can see a date stamp. I have the car up on the ramp, so should be able to see it.

The crank case, I think, is from a 72 T. It then got turned into the ST engine I have in the car now. The other numbers on the head/rocker I'll need to check again. But it is possible these are from a later car - perhaps a 73. Many thanks.

I’ve found the date stamp. It has 76 over a straight line, with 28 below. Above this is stamped three things. G4C.

Am I right in thinking August 72?

The engine number is 6273836

Does this help identify the engine?

The other stamped number is 911/85. So, what do you think I have in my 72 car?

Yes, originally from a US-spec '77 911S - 2.7 litre 165bhp
