Carrying your driving license in your car

I know that it's mandatory to carry your driving license in many countries - but what about in the UK ?
I have only ever carried my insurance docs with me as I figured that if the car was stolen I would also lose
my license ( which is the old style non photo type ) and have the hassle of getting a photo type replacement.
According to ' Ask the Police ' website I should carry the following.
Driving license
Insurance
MOT certificate
So, if I regularly drive 2 or 3 different cars I should remember to fish the license out of one car and place it in the other ?
I know police often allows 7 days to produce your license at a police station but am totally confused by this statement given on the same website.

" From a crime prevention point of view it is better never to leave your driving documents in your car and produce them within the 7 day period."
Just wondered what other people do.

I always have my (photocard) driving licence with me wherever I go - as a means of ID rather than as my driving licence per se ...

Never a truer word from a Yorkshire-man said. You've always been accused on not getting your wallet out and now we know why

UK and abroad:
Copy of the Insurance, AA/RAC number in the glove box, recovery card in the wallet as it is not car specific.

Paper Licence with sellotape (applied for me by AVIS in some Italian airport) in my Wallet always. Amuses many when they see it and the points of yesteryear.
Everything else at home, mobile always with me.

I suppose a note of your blood group and donor card in the car might be a good idea, my type is semi-rare.

Never have an original document in any car.

Perhaps a good time to adopt the London look.
