Speed cameras in Italy!

Post by 911hillclimber »

We are in Italy on hols in a hire car.
Been to
Italy several times in recent years, but the proliferation of cameras is extraordinary.
They seem to be around every town corner, are easy to miss even if you see the non description warning sign while you keep an eye on the guy welded to your back bumper...
Tail gating is a national hobby here.

My car reads too fast on the speedo, 50 kph is 47 according to the few speed check cameras around, but I have no confidence I have not been photographed.

How do these cameras work?
There are no road markings, the short 'pillar box' sized unit has one porthole looking at you, and 2 of the same looking at your rear end if on your side.
Do they snap you with no flash as soon as it sees you?
It could be many 100s of meters line of sight for the camera.
There is not much on Google, so anyone with any info please?
I know the fines and the points side, just not how you know how they work.
This mass of cameras are new to
Italy I think in this density, the authorities must be making a fortune.
Few locals seem to abide by the limit posted, hence everyone tailgating me, esp if in a big BMW, AUDI, 4x4, almost never a FIAT!

When I was there last September it felt safer to adopt the local driving style than stick to the rules. Didn't see many speed cameras at all over the two weeks and drove from North to south. Lots of those Gantry cameras but think they are for Lorry tax or something and are now redundant.

I think has been a step change since the start of the yer, many of the new camera stations were on fresh concrete plinths.
These cameras are not like our Gatso types...

I was over there in October and managed to get 2 tickets. Both from cameras in Bologna although not speeding. One for being in the wrong lane and another for being in a central residential area without the correct permit. They only turned up last week!
Both were pretty expensive in comparison to U.K. Tickets and I had to pay an admit fee for each to the bloody rental company. Very painful. I have driven many thousands of miles all over mainland Europe and never had a ticket before. Will be more vigilant from now on.
Keep your eyes peeled!

A friend got a raft of fines in his hire car last year in some town for parking near his hotel, seems it's a part of the town reserved for local residents only.

I've had a parking ticket already on the cars screen, I parked in a blue line space without putting my time of arrival card on the dash.
Found out about the system from the hotel receptionist later.
Paid at the Post Office next day, 28 Euro plus 1.5 Euro to the post man...
Normal price 40 Euro.
Locals not happy either.

These cameras are everywhere so beware.

I imagine a lot of European countries are feeling the squeeze .... best way of 'raising taxes' via the back door to prop up an ailing economy ... fine the motorists

The fuckwit North Yorkshire policy commissioner we have seems to like the extra income the camera vans generate and has just invested in another 6 smaller one s the can be placed in areas where normal vans can't access !

They will all be redundant when we all have 'Google' cars driving us everywhere.
It's been a real turn off for me on this holiday in one of the best parts of Italy we have ever visited.
I've never had so many cars que'd behind me before as I do these speed limits...

Little wonder tailgating is so rife..

I've been driving to Italy for our annual vacation the past 15 years or so and I'd be surprised if I've seen more than 10 cameras in the whole time. I'll keep my eyes peeled come September...

They are littered in the towns mainly enforcing 50kph zones and a few 30kph areas too.
We have been travelling Lake Garda and Iseo, then up to Merano, so my experiences are of these areas.
Last came to Italy 3 years ago and barely a camera to be seen then.
If you miss the road side warning sign, you will in camera view immediately.
My wife is very alert to them, but even she missed a few...
