Just a thought...

I am tinkering with the idea of installing a 3.4 Boxster engine and box into my hill climb 1978 Lola T 492 to replace the low output 3.2 and 915 box.

Compared to the 3.2 this will be a messy intall, ecu wires and water system but no dry sump oil etc..and maybe 60 bhp more and a slick gearbox.

My question is finding a complete drive train with ECU etc.
All any of the usual breakers will sell you is a long block from a write-off and demand your blown long block in exchange. For a lot of money.
I might answer my own question, but it seems the best plan is to buy a complete damaged non repairable car for the radiators etc if intact etc and scrap the rest off or even sell interior parts and others.
How can you get to these dead cars?
Obviously auctions but can anyone just register and buy?
The breaker up north seems to have all the dead Porsches in England....

Any experiences please?

You need a breakers license or similar to buy these cars, have looked into it.

Alternative may be to buy a damaged but repairable car then scrap it. 3.4S on ebay now. Likely more cost than what you described but potential to offset it by parting it out yourself. A lot of hassle though.

Unless you really want to miss the next two seasons trying to make it work I'd leave well alone!

Thank you all, I think...
It's a race car with no pedigree, and to leave it means standing still.
It has little value to many so not precious, it is a home brewed car I've modified.
It is a bit slow, nothing to do with me of course!

I really need a revvy engine and a snappy gearbox, the 3.2 even on carbs is dull and peters out at 6400, the 915 box is very much typical of the generation of this box, slow and reluctant most of the time.
I don't know how to improve either, but a 7500 red line would be the objective and a box like a ...boxster.
My 250 bhp 987 gen ll 2.9 boxster is ballistic in comparison, just 250 is not enough, I need 50 more minimum.
I've discussed this on DDK before, so won't bore you more, but I can't see another way forward other than breaking the Lola and starting again with a more modern car, but I really do not want to do another full on project that the Lola was/is.
I thought there was something that would stop me going to an auction and buying a 3.4 boxster or Caman.

It's not boring Graham, it's your car and your project. I'm sure we will all watch the rebuild with interest

Why not stay within the air-cooled family but move up the range? A standard 993 engine will get you started at 270bhp+; mate that to a fresh G50 box and you'll have a nice upgrade from your current setup.
If you want a bit more maybe add a Ninemeister supercharger for an extra 70-80bhp...I'd imagine all of the above would need much less work to integrate compared to a water-cooled Boxster setup....

Just a thought?

Will be tuneable to silly BHP, oddly someone installed one in a Boxster on Pistonheads.

Thank you for he ideas, but I've been through them all!

The 964 engines are great but finding one impossible and probably tired.
The G50 box would need to be turned upside down (as used in Ultima's etc) which will put the driveshafts in a difficult place for alignment but would essentially bolt in.
I could use the PMO's too as they are big enough for the larger capacity.

Compromise is the 964 engine to the 915 which is a simple task and can even use the hydraulic clutch too.

The AUDI V6 is a big engine in size and tall, the flat 6 is so low and of course good for CofG etc in the car. The AUDI may weigh even more than the 3.2.
The Audi box would be ideal for a mid engine application. Price is a major advantage. Would sound good too.

An alternative would be the AUDI 1.8 turbo and box. This engine is small and light and can be tweeked to high bhp/rpm and the box would be ideal too.
This idea was seriously considered a few years ago when the 3.2/box was such a real pain to get right.

Maybe I'm getting an itch to do something in the garage !
I have the 911 to prep for paint, possibly some local welding to do since it was last welded in 1988, there must be some to do.

Not sure I'm ready to do a 4th 2 wheeler restoration so looking at the Lola.
Time to think it through. Wife wants to stay as we are (she loves hillclimbing motorsport) as it works and looks great.
Sounds good I'm told, I've never heard it go up a hill.

This was taken in 2013 when it ran badly but actually changed gear cleanly.

On a side note, and this may sound like heresy, but would you consider a VW Type1 four cylinder with a turbo bolted on top? The correct combination will see you realize 300bhp+ easily and the end product will be a lot lighter that its six cylinder relative. Seems strange to be suggesting it given that every VW guy wants to put a Porsche lump into their Beetle but given the way the market has progressed the cost per bhp has turned things on its head again, imho.

Must admit, never thought of a flat 4.
Bags of room in the rear for that!
Brings up the gearbox issue though.

A suitable racing box for 250 lb.ft is about 9k!

More heresy...
Much as I loathe the dominance of PDK gearboxes, I will admit they work. My M5 changes a lot quicker than I could...
If you really want to go fast, Boxster S plus PDK?
