OK, I suppose I've spun this out long enough now ...

The car is actually 'Green' - but it's not that straightforward.

It's officially 'Verde' 95-37977 - a colour that wasn't offered as standard on Spider models in Europe, but was in the USA where it was referred to as 'Apple Green'.

This is what it looks like (the seller's photos):

Although I've collected the car I haven't had the opportunity to take any pictures yet.

As mentioned earlier, the car still has its original paint code sticker on the underside of the bootlid so I'm just waiting for confirmation from the Factory as to whether it was a special order colour or some other explanation.

This car was manufactured close to the end of the boat-tail production & RHD models represented such a small portion of the overall numbers that it's well known for them to differ in many ways from equivalent LHD versions.

In case anyone's thinking

"aah, it's obviously a LHD USA model that was imported, converted to RHD & had the Spica injection system replaced by Webers"

- LHD (USA), LHD (Euro) & RHD models all had their own unique model designation number & chassis number sequences ... so that rules out that possibility

For those interested in statistics, here are some production details:

Total number of 1968/'69 1750 Spider Veloce models manufactured = 5602

This can be broken down as follows:

LHD Euro models - 2786

LHD USA models - 2215

RHD models - 601

Obviously the RHD models were destined for South Africa, Australia, Japan, etc in addition to the UK & it is thought that 223 of these RHD models came to the UK.

Currently there are details of 133 RHD '68/'69 1750 Spiders listed on the Duetto register with the following colour spread:

Red - 92
White - 16
Blue - 7
Ivory - 5
Green - 1*
Black - 1

Plus:

Yellow (non-original) - 1
Bare metal (undecided eventual colour) - 10

The one green car listed is in 'Verde Inglese' (BRG) which was a std colour.

So it looks as if my car may well prove to be unique in respect of being RHD & this particular colour.

These are the currently-installed S4 seats that the owner had re-upholstered in black & green leather:

- & here are a couple of shots of the engine (nice & clean which is always a good indication):

Looks lovely Andy..I can see why you might have been undecided about the colour...but it's unusual tone makes it probably all the more appealing...interesting that the instrument binacle is a single form...I had (wrongly) assumed the twin instrument covers were an original feature of all the early Spiders..phased out when the S3 model came along

Are you coming to Spa this year...?...would be excellent to see it then..

Lovely looking car Andy, congrats 8)

I guess the BS AU plate on the bulkhead is a similar requirement to those fitted on early UK RHD 911's?

Jonathan - this is the style of the S1 dash:

Image

The previous owner of my car had covered the body-coloured portion of the dash with black leather - that will be one of the first things to remove !

With the S2 (Kamm-tail) 1750/2000 models, the dash changed to the style you were probably thinking of:

The car looks to be in very very nice condition Andy. You can always tell when a car has been cherished like that. Let's hope when you remove the dash leather it's not red under there!

Nice buy and a great informative story as usual.

Regards
Mike
