915 transmission shift selection problem

Hi everyone, I have owned my 1982 911 sc for 9.5 yrs. Only done about 1500 miles in it over the last 3-4 yrs (bought car with engine in boxes and took an age to rebuild it!)
Gear selection has always been okay. Last time I drove it was for the last mot (April 2016)
Went to get it out yesterday to run it up ready for this years mot and with the selector in neutral gate the gearbox is still in gear.
So I dropped the coupling off, jacked it up onto some axle stands with a block of wood under the nsr tyre (so I can turn osr wheel to see when it's in neutral while playing with the selector)
With a pair of mole grips on the selector shaft inside the car I can feel all the gears and the neutral gate, but the gearbox is always in gear.

Not heard of this problem before but not had any experience with a 915 either.

Does anyone have any ideas before I drop the engine and gbox out?
