Is it madness...

Post by scalino65 »

It cant only be me that sometimes thinks, hmmm, Ive had this 911 a fair while now and I fancy a change. So, would it be madness to swap a 911 for something like this? Or would the novelty quickly wear off (probably at the first corner you encountered)and you'd be missing the old girl. If I had one of these I think I might be happy just listening to it rather than driving it....
If you have been in this situation, I'd be interested to know what car tempted you, what stopped you and what didnt!

I get. The same feeling about 4 times a year having owned my '73 for 28 years.
Familiarity and a high degree of laziness stop the sale.

There are many good looking cars around for 1/2 the 911 price and many a lot less than that.Q

Better to have tried different cars (even if it disappoints/doesn't live up to your expectations - at least you can tick it off the list) than to always be wondering what you might have missed ...

Similarly, I've been pondering on this '65 Falcon Futura for months:

The sound is incredible but unsure how long I'd put up with the actual driving experience.

Thanks chaps for your thoughts. Its very confusing isnt it!
What sort of things do people think about swapping their 911 for?
For me, in addition to nutty mustangs, ali cobra replica, lotus cortina, mini cooper, lotus elan, (in fact you could do a two for one with most of these) I also have a much more stupid idea of having a Lotus 23 on the road - I was talking to the historic lotus 23 chap the other day who described a 23 as making a 7 look like a double decker bus:

I've had similar ideas about the 23 - missed out on a lovely Xanthos 23 which was for sale at Paul Matty's a few years ago & have been in touch with Kelvin Jones a few times about one of his 'continuation' cars (the development of Henry Tombs' Xanthos) ...

I would just like to own something with a twink in it, be it 23, or some sort fo very quick elan. Didnt you have a brm or a brm lookylikey at one stage Andy? what did you think of it?

Yes, I had an up-rated Elan S3 in BRM colours:

It was a lovely example but it just didn't 'do it' for me ...

Someone made a 23 Replica with a Zetec a few years back. I had a go in one with 200bhp, it went well. I expect the fact I can't now find anything online means they don't exist any more.

Well, there's this one knocking about with a 2.4 porsche engine in it.

Trouble is, for me, I'd get all snobby about it and have to have a "real" one. Although trying to wade through whats real and whats repro is a hell of a muddle. The other thing about replicas is its a very limited market for getting shot
Andy, if I may, what was it about the elan you didnt click with? I feel very claustrophobic in a fhc one so I'd have to go dhc.
I suppose the other thing about "ticking them off the list" is that you retain the thrill of the hunt!

The problem with a real Lotus 23 is trying to get it road-registered.

I'd been tempted by the Porsche-engined one that's been advertised for quite a while but, again, it's not road-registered.

As for the Elan, it was the general 'feel' - particularly things like the interior, door 'furniture', poor quality switches & controls, etc.

Don't get me wrong, I don't crave luxury - far from it, the 'bare bones' feel of the 904 with zero sound deadening or trim was perfect for me.

I've just bought another car that's been on my 'list' for a long time - a '69 Alfa 1750 boat-tail Spider...

The one you posted a photo of recently, Andy? Have always liked those, too! So little time...
