6 x 15 Fuchs wheel

Post by 911pete »

Flat 6 wheel in excellent condition. Original anodising, no kerbing. Probably been a spare all its life. £350 posted to your door in UK.

Hello Pete, do you think this is a real Flat 6 Fuchs wheel ?
If it was a genuine Flat 6 Fuchs with original anodising then I would be interested.
There are obvious machining marks outboard of the petals. This either isn't an original wheel or someone has aggressively machined and original wheel and left these lines. If it has been machined then unlikely to have original anodising but it could have been re-anodised of course. What makes you think it has original anodising ? Have you tested the surface ?

I guess it is an original wheel that has been machined and left marks, or it is some kind of replica.
Can you please provide some more details, eg. pictures of all the markings on the back of the spokes and the date stamp ?
Do please be aware that some of the best replicas have a Porsche part number so you have to look at some of the other markings to be sure. Very happy for you to prove otherwise but to me it looks like a badly machined original or a replica.
Regards
Andrew

I'd have to say it looks like a replica to me as well.

Thanks for the replies .I am sorry if I have been in any way misleading. Full history on the wheel is that I bought it from Heddingham a couple of years ago. The seller said that it was the correct wheel for my 72 2.4E. It certainly looked the same. I thought these were flat 6's ? but I am by no means an expert.
To me it looks like its had little use and the mark to me looks like a tyre lever mark around half of the rim edge.
I hope this picture will explain the identity of it.

Hi Pete,
I wasn't talking about any damage mark on the edge of the rim (I hadn't noticed that at all). I was talking about the machined edge marks going right round the wheel you can see just outboard of the edge of the petal. This area is smooth on an original wheel and there would be no lines.

Looking at the markings on the back then, it looks like a very faithful replica with a lot of the correct markings but some extra ones as well. I'd be curious too know what type of wheel this is. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable on these matter than me can advise.
Cheers
Andrew

Wow. I never realised it was a replica. There are a couple of very faint round rubber stamp marks also. I cannot make them out.
obviously I paid too much for it at £375. If someone wants to make a sensible offer then feel free.
Here is a pic of the part number close up.

That's a genuine - later ('80's) - version of the 6in Fuchs wheel ...

Interesting. What does the date stamp say ? usually on the one of the small ridges close to the centre ring on the back

By the time this wheel was produced, the date stamp had moved to the main 'petal' area & the format had changed from month/year to week/year ...

Its stamped 03 87 on the petal area. I wasn't really bothered about the dates - I just wanted a genuine fuchs wheel that was of the same type as on my 72. 2.4E . I am sure it would make a good spare for someone.
Cheers Pete.

I'm sure it would make a good spare Pete and to most it won't matter a jot but there are definite differences compared with a genuine 73 wheel. The curve from petal to petal behind the lug holes is quite different for one.

Out of curiosity then, were those obvious machining transition marks just outboard of the petals on the front face standard then on a late Flat6 ×15 Fuchs ? or has someone machined it and left those transition marks as part of a subsequent refurb?

I had no idea that Porsche were still supplying new 911 in 1987 with 15" wheels. I am surprised. I thought they had changed to 16" well before then.

From memory, 15in wheels were still standard fitment on the 3.2 Carrera.

In addition, wheels were probably being produced as replacement parts (in a similar way to new 15in Fuchs wheels being available from Porsche now).
