wheels and tyres 911T

Post by scooby »

Hi

I have a 1973 911T, currently on 15 inch 7 inch wide cookie cutters. I am considering getting a set of fuch rims 7inch wide front and 8 inch wide rear. Will these fit? what tyre size would you use ? Would I need to modify the bodywork. Tyres is one area that my knowledge is not great on, and I have done a fair amount of searching around which lead me here, and I am hoping you guys can share your experience and advice with me. This car needs a full restoration but I am just in the early phases of research, to see what's possible.

thanks in advance,

8in Fuchs wheels will not fit on the rear of a standard-bodied '73 911T ...

Thanks Andy, would I need to flare the arches or is it more involved? Would I be better to get a full set of 7inch. I have seen some sets of 6 and 7 inch, would 6 inch work on the front, or is this a slippery slope? The car is going to need extensive work so reworking the arches is feasible, although I more inclined to leave it stock.

6 at the front (deep or flat) and 7 at the back (deep with spacers or flat), or 7 inch all round x15, are both well known combinations without having to modify the bodywork.

Mike

The standard wheels on a 73 T were steel. Fuchs alloys were an optional extra on the T (and E).

This is my 73T with 7 x 15 rims all round and 195 x 65 x 15" Dunlop Blu Sport tyres.

Note, these rims are not Fuchs 7" but I believe the off-set etc is the same. (they are Dage wheels).
The car is 20mm lower than stock.

1st I normally reply sooner, but have been dogged by issues with interweb
thanks Mike, that's super helpful, i think a set of 7 x 15 will be the route I go.
hillclimb, your 73 T looks very ice, and the dage wheels look good, I might consider those, but I had in mind fuchs
alfietom this is going to be an epic project, I might start a thread with a more generic title if that acceptable

would these be OK http://www.ebay.com/itm/Porsche-911-Fuc ... 6R&vxp=mtr

They would all work. The first set are in your date and type range as long as they are just polished. If they have been chromed I would forget them. You will never achieve the original finish successfully (so I've been told). The second two sets of 7's are outside your date range and type but not many would know or care. They take the ring centre caps rather than the three pronged type due to a slightly different sized centre hole. Make sure you get the centre caps if included. You might spend £200+ per wheel to get them refurbished to original spec so bear that in mind on the purchase price. FYI Darren on ddk advertised a very nice set of 6x15 Fuchs in the original finish with 40+ years of lovely patina for about £2000 if I remember. Getting to look good value when you look at your eBay ads. Don't forget the 20% import tax on anything from the USA (goods plus shipping).

Regards
Mike

I would stick with 6s if I were you, especially on standard power running gear. It's a lot more fun!

I liked the 6's on the front and 7R's on the rear on my E. The larger tyres on the rear were a lot more reassuring especially in the wet when running hard. It looked nice too and still appeared standard to most.

I have 7 & 8s on my 911, I have fitted 205/60 and 225/60 Continental tyres, but might try 205/225s, which were the recommended fitment for the early 930s which use the same rim widths. My car has RS rear arches:
