VW Vanagon GL

Bit of an impulse buy, but been looking to get into Vanlife for a while.

After a quick look online I found a nice '91 VW Vanagon GL. It is currently located about 4 hours south, but after a chat with the seller / dealer, we agreed on a price which included trailering to my house.

Initial search to buying in under 3 hours

So bought it blind, but all felt good (fingers crossed)...worst that happens I sell it on in Portland...big demand for them around here.

What have we got...

Body is straight and underside in good condition.

Fitted with rebuilt ''original'' 2.1 water cooled engine

Will trade-in ''Yank Tank'' Durango...Will miss the acres of leather, Dr Dre Beats sound system and the V8 HEMI, though maybe not the 16MPG !

Image

This is the plan...

Keep it fairly standard looking, but play with some graphics involving vinyl and Plasti-Dip. Rook Rack, rear Ladder etc. Just need to persuade Mrs Jury that we need the Subaru engine conversion! Will keep the people carrier interior for now, want to get the kids involved and make it a family project.

Then get out and explore more of Oregon :)

Not me, for sure. I only use OPV's. [Other People's Vans]

That's going to look great Chris. Nice to see the roundel... Is that a Modhod on the roof?

BTW, search to purchase in 3 hours? I couldn't do it but I like your style!

You're going to have a lot of fun with that. 8)

PS Maybe it should be the Modpod?!

Bizarre - just been looking at late ones of these because I can't find any other US-market van (minivan, commercial van, anything that will carry all my work stuff) that I actually want to own.

That's a handsome van. You're likely way ahead on this, but have you checked out the Bostig conversion that uses a Ford Focus motor? To my mind, a better engine than the Subaru, can be run naturally aspirated or turbo'd, and an extremely elegant/sanitary installation package. John in CT.

Really nice van.....Person ally I'd leave the 2.1 in it. I ran one for 4 years and it's still around here in Dorset what must be 10 years on going strong.
The steering wheel cover might inspire me to cover my T5 one too !!!!!

Spent a small fortune updating pretty much everything underneath the Van, it now rides and handles so much better...Also fitted some decent tyres, the "rubber bands" that were fitted were awful !

Which means I can get the Graphics pack started ////////// :)
