Ideas for motorway-mile-munching fun?
I have started doing a weekly commute to Mansfield which is a fairly dull 165m motorway journey twice a week.
I'm currently doing it in my 100k mile VW Touareg. It needs some things sorting - tyres, brakes, central (not)locking, glowplugs (nasty) and the gearchange is getting a bit clunky (valve-chest apparently). So I am thinking of p'exing. The obvious change is for a Cayenne (3 years old, 25-30k miles). I did have a look at what Camtune can do, but what a hateful 2nd-hand car dealer experience!
Anyone want to punt any other suggestions for suitable mile-munchers? I thought of a 996TT, but that's going to cost a fair bit in fuel and maint.
Cheers
Graham

You'd get a killer deal on a 5 series right now - they're just about to launch the new one so the current ones will be available on decent deals for not much.. You could get a 520d m sport for 299pcm / 2k deposit in the summer so id reckons somewhere around the same and with no deposit as a starting point..
Another option if you want another big 4x4 is the new volvo xc90 - I think its prob a marmite car but I love the look of them and they're MEGA comfy..![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)

We've all got C Class Mercs, they're more spacious than the BMWs and a bit softer and more comfortable.

520d auto is perfect for this ... We do 100miles per day in our m-sport over country roads and having had many other cars, can't really fault the BMW ( had merc c-class in the past but just didn't like it )
Some fantastic lease deals out there as small speed says

Panamera diesel? LPG Cayenne? Tesla Model S?
996T, why not? Disposes of miles with aplomb and with steady values any maint will be offset by lack of depreciation, innit.

Try a Mercedes CLS, great cruising car and the underpinnings of a German Taxi. Eats the miles up so easily

If you're on a motorway, Ford Mondeos are ignored by everyone and yet more comfortable and ride better. I don't like the bumpy, jiggly ride of the more sporting Audis, BMWs and Mercs, only Porsche get it right with the Boxsters, but a Mondeo is lovely, smooth, quiet and relaxing car to travel in and they last for ever. They don't have Street Fred, but they're very good indeed.

Nice Volvos out there these days, good alternative to the usual German stuff.
Re: Ideas for motorway-mile-munching fun?
For trundling on the motorway for hours, reliably, with comfort and decent sounds I love my Evoque. Seats are great and it sits at 85 for hours on end giving me over 30mpg

Re: Ideas for motorway-mile-munching fun?
Forgive me for my gauche choices, but:
Anything Alpina BMW. Ive got the B3 Biturbo and it is lush. I was looking at getting a Maserati, but the Ghibli 3.0 Biturbo diesel is underwhelming, the petrols are very nice, the quottroporte is awesome in the petrol variant, and sensible in the diesel. I liked the Quattroporte a lot.
And then I drove the Alpina and bought it on the spot. If I really really want to enjoy myself, I take my 924S! Man: with a set of adjustable Koni's, 968 Anti Roll bars, suspension set up "just so", leather sport seats, I get 32mpg spanking it. Services are laughable (even a clutch change: compare that with anything modern!!!!), top quality tyres are 85 quid a corner, and the bloody thing appreciates. 0-62 in 8.2 seconds, top of 137mph, and it is supremely comfortable on the motorway and you throw it in a roundabout. If anything, it is Porsche's little secret.
Over 70 000 miles it costed me on average, all in, 38 pence a mile.
Beat that
Cheers,
Bert
