Progress over the early summer was slow. I've moved from Ascot 60 miles away down to Chichester for a new job, and while the new place has got a garage it rapidly filled with household goods taken out of long-term storage. As a consequence the old 911 had to remain behind in the Ascot garage, and while I was able to get the occasional hour or two working on some of the smaller items, not much happened until July.
In the middle of the month I unexpectedly found myself with a couple of days leave. At short notice I was able to book the car into GT One for a pre-MOT check and test, but there was still a long list of jobs before I could present it to their workshops in Chertsey. It included re-attaching the rev-counter wiring, re-fitting the rear bumper, re-wiring the headlights so they dipped in unison, fitting a engine cover lift, sorting out the screenwashers, centering the rear torsion bars, and so on. A day and a half's effort later and son#2 and I were driving down to Chertsey, the first time the car had run in nearly 2 years. I also asked GT One to do a nut and bolt check, mainly for my peace of mind, along with a couple of minor bits under the car I couldn't manage on my own.
Other than some idle speed issues there were no advisories, so I was able to collect the car a few days later with a fresh ticket, and take it down to the south coast. The hunting at steady throttle and general poor running wasn't something I was going to be able to live with for the thousand miles running in so last week I had an early start and by 7.30* I was waiting outside Tim Airey's place near Winchester for a rolling road session:
Tom heading over to say "Hello".
A couple of hours later, a tweak here, a jet swop there, and the difference was night and day.
The engine was still tight, so the dyno runs were very gentle, but peak power promises to be good, and more importantly for road use, it now pulls nicely without hesitation from tickover.
I went home the long way.

If the next issue of Classic Porsche is late, I blame you. I've just discovered, and read from start to finish (bearing in mind the mag passes for press tomorrow...), your tales of woe and success! Congrats for sticking with it – I know how you must have felt at times...
