Hi All,
As a recent new joiner to the forum and about to start my restoration project, I thought I'd fire up a thread to share with you. I've had my non running 1973 US 911T 2.4 MFI for a week now and I've been assessing what is required.
My objective is not to create a concours car but a very good useable 911, ultimately with a few extra horses. But I want to know that what it needs has been done right.
With the bodywork as the first priority, I need to have the following done by someone who has done this many times before. I'm looking for recommendations as to who could take this on. I'd like to keep cost down as far a possible, I am happy to strip the car as required. I live in Hove on the south coast so ideally a restorer in the south east.
Body work:
Lower B post, sill and kidney bowls, both sides.
Offside lower A pillar.
Both front wings, replace or repaired?
Near side C pillar needs partly cutting out and replacing.
Parcel shelf is holed, support panel largely gone.
I'd be grateful for any advice / recommendations.

Thanks Andrew, yes I've heard differing opinions on Beverly Hills. I think I have a good base car for a restoration though.

Never seen rust like that down a 911 front wing.
Hope you get it pulled apart soon so we can see what is what.

Agreed more than a little odd but the inner wing appears completely solid. I've been working on recommissioning the engine but i'll get the wings off soon.911hillclimber wrote:Never seen rust like that down a 911 front wing.

Quick update, I've had the car around a month now. It is really solid in the floors, inner wings and front cross member. Not found any extra rot so far, the original body work list above stands.
I wanted to understand the state of the engine. New batteries installed showed most of the electrics working. Date labels on the batteries it arrived with indicate to me that the car has probably not run for 20 -22 years. So, old oil out, bores oiled, new oil in, new oil and fuel filters, almost all the fuel hoses replaced, fuel pump tested electrically, plugs, cap and rotor arm good. With the CDI whining and the fuel pump whirring, I turn the key and amazingly it starts and doesn't run too badly. I'll see if it will get into gear and move this weekend.
I got the CoA today, engine is matching, red book already indicated it was in the right range. Gearbox has been swapped, was a 915/12 4 speed, now has a 915/06 5 speed.
A couple of questions for you.
Engine is wearing a green (2.2E?) engine shroud. Why would that have been changed? Were the factory consistent with the colours? From what I've read I should have a yellow shroud.
Colour / Paint codes. The tag on the car says 936-9-3 Silver Metallic. The CoA states Silver Metallic 8080. I assume the tag on the car is likely to be correct? CoA says production complete 24.10.1972.

They are 2.4 throttles and stacks.....why would you say its a 2.2E shroud? I don't think there is any difference between a 2.2E and a 2.4E shroud altho the ducting for the oil cooler may be a little different. (Cant remember)
You are correct the colour should be Yellow
If you can take a photo of the distributor you can confirm if its a 2.2 or 2.4.
The shroud must have been changed at some time....Wonder if its been re-built to E spec?

I found a reference on the web for the shroud colours, green with grey duct was a 2.2E. Engine is stamped with 911/51 which is correct for A 2.4 but I too wonder if it has been re built at some point.

My old 2.4E engine had that combo of shroud. Odd part to change from red to green if the engine has been rebuilt unless the red one was damaged beyond use?

You missed it Graham. The original shroud should be yellow not red and the oil cooler ducts are different from 2.2 to 2.4. The factory were consistent with colors and it does appear you have an E shroud. You have a hole ontop of your shroud which might be consistent with the air duct fixing and a curious grey piece covering your shroud but not fixed at the corner. You have a two bolt fan strap consistent with your build date. What are the two rows of numbers on your silver tag ontop of the mfi pump?
