356 engine vs 912 engine

Post by gooders »

Are they completely identical? Or are there subtle differences? Would a 356 engine affect the resale value over 912 engine in a 912?

Well it's not that simple but there there quite a few different 616 engine (ignoring the earlier engines). In order of value matching numbers original engine, correct engine for year of car and another engine. However, difference between the versions are often crank, cam, value springs etc (which may of been changed during rebuilds anything).

If you don't have an engine in your car then get a good case/base to work from go to 1720 and get some quality parts in it and speak to a good builder.

There are a lot of differences over the years. Many changes are with the oil system in the third piece. There was quite the evolution with these engines, so it is far better to get one that is matching year at least.

Sounds like matching the years would be the best way to go then, just a shame there is not much on the market, I'll just have to wait it out.

Thanks for your help.

As David says, there are many iterations of the 356 and in turn the 912 engine, most of which will, or can be made to fit into your engine bay and cause your car to proceed.

As Neil says, having the original engine would be the ideal scenario and then perhaps an engine of the correct year, but sitting and waiting for either of these two options to turn up.... well you might never ever get round to driving the old girl.

Much better, I think, to draw up a short list of the type of engines you think would suit your style of driving and then go on a search to find such a beast. I'm sure there are few specialists out there who have unadvertised engines sitting, waiting for the right person to come along. Then perhaps a wanted ad here on DDk might throw up an opportunity or two. If you're feeling flush there are people who will build you a suitable engine from the parts you can find.

Good luck with your search.

Hi Mike, Anything 1967? Do you rebuild as well? If so would you be able to message me a price?
