1972 911 T LHD Restoration (Pics Fixed!)

Post by lamakdaddy »

Whilst I have owned a number of modern 911s and Boxsters (and even a Cayenne :() I have always hankered after a pre impact 911. After some research I found a sweet spot in terms of price/performance/rarity etc. The 72 cars (T, E, S) have similar engines (all 2.4) and looks and but are in various states of tune.

In addition the cars look similar and have the one year only outside oil filler cap. The S models have gone stratospheric and I just didn't feel the cars to be worth $150k to $200k.

I decided to look for a T or an E and needed a left hand drive as I live in the United Arab Emirates. I found out that the T was also fuel injection in the USA in 72 and decided on that particular model.

I found a lovely number matching car with S spec brakes, suspension, spoiler, wheels and most importantly factory air conditioning. A California car most of its life it was described as rust free and in good running order..so I purchased it over the internet from the dealer in California. The only negative for the car was that it had received a paint change from Signal Yellow to Red. This suited me fine as I would be restoring it and signal yellow is a top 3 colour for me on these early cars.

The car arrived into Dubai and I was pleasantly surprised...it started and ran very well and came with all its invoices from 1973 onward !

I am fortunate that JZM Gulf has established a new branch 10kms from my house and they will be dealing with all the stripping, mechanical and refitting of the car. Paint is being handled by another garage who are specialists in classic cars and have done exceptional work for me in the past.

Looks like a lovely car. Should prove to be a great starting point.
I'm looking forward to the restoration. I hope it goes well for you. :)

Good looking car :) . Care to share which dealer in Ca. you procured her/him/it from?

Signal Yellow over brown sounds like a fine combination 8) .

Interested to hear how JZM get on out there.

Regular updates, please!

Oh, and welcome to DDK :compress: .

Hi ..I will be taking poetic license on the interior by fitting houndstooth and a black carpet. I prefer it over the brown vinyl.

I purchased the car from Chequered Flag who were straightforward and honest.

Jonas previously of JZM is here in Abu Dhabi and now works at JZM Gulf and its great having him around. There was a need for good specialist in Abu Dhabi and a local entrepreneur/car fan invited him over to operate a new facility.

Some more pics of the strip down. The engine tub and battery boxes etc are all in great shape. I am seeking ways of removing the thin layer of black paint over the original Signal yellow (I love originality 'dusted paint' as opposed to concours). I may well try dry ice blasting which could just do the trick. I also intend to do the same on the underside which is lovely and solid..some idiot obviously used a fork lift when loading it and damaged some of the under-seal...such a shame...but can be localised..

Thanks Gary. Been watching your lovely engine rebuild thread...wish I was that talented. The engine of mine appears in good health apart from usual leaks. Its never been rebuilt but has had new tensions etc quite recently as well as a rebuilt fuel injection pump etc. I will restore and use the car and see how it performs. It can always be attended to later..

Signal Yellow's a great colour for an early 911 ... 8)
