What's in my garage?

Post by Nick Moss »

My FB friends will know that I have been shopping in the USA recently.

A few of us went over to California last August for Monterey Car Week and we spent a bit of time at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Laguna Seca. I had already fallen in love with the 1965/66 Shelby GT350, and there were certainly plenty to see there that week, they were celebrating the 50th anniversary of the GT350 and had a full 50 car field race and a display of the icons on the lawn at Pebble Beach.

For the last 12 months I have been looking for a 1966 GT350 to buy, and have bid (unsuccessfully) on a couple at auction, including this one that was pulled out of storage by Vic's mate Wayne Carini

There are as many pitfalls in buying a GT350 as a 2.7RS, they were made in similar numbers (excluding the slightly de-tuned Hertz version). Many have rusted and been re-shelled into the relatively common Mustang fastback shell, or they have been raced and lost the original engine. Spotting this in the various cars that I considered was impossible and getting a car reliably inspected in a country as big as the USA with just a handful of specialists was very difficult

I looked at several for sale in the UK, but even with the support of SAAC, The Shelby Amercan Auto Club, ant their fantastic 4.5 lb register, which contains info on each car, I could not find anything suitable here. I even considered a continuation Cobra at £150K at the Hairpin Motor Co.

Love that Hairpin continuation and it has such a great back-story.

My friend has a 350gt, he sold a perfect e9 "Batmobile" to buy it.. I thought he was mental at the time, however it is a really nice car and he's American so there is an element of "child hood dream" about it

350r looks pretty amazing - we hired a new mustang last summer to drive all over California in, and my wife has been after a hot one ever since!

While looking for an original GT350 I remembered that the display of 65/66 Shelbys at Laguna Secahad included a new 2015 GT350 on its side. There was some lovely engineering on view!

The more I looked for an original, the more I realised that finding the car I wanted was going to be nigh on impossible, and would almost certainly involve quite a bit of restoration work. Although mechanically a simple car, restoration is difficult due to the scarcity of correct date-stamped (and everything is date stamped) parts and particularly the correct finishes on various parts.

So my mind turned to a new GT350. Not the base model but the limited edition GT350R

sounds like an awesome spec! that exhaust looks pretty loud too

if its US spec then there might be a second set of cat's that could go?.. find that on a lot of the n/a high output BMW's - there are cats in the manifolds and secondaries in the exhaust system which creates quite a lot of restriction (although the pic of the one on its side, looks like it just has one set in the down-pipes?) but is required to meet the US emissions laws.. on something like an m3 its worth somewhere around 40bhp with a remap (which is a lot for an N/A with over 100bhp per litre  )

The next problem was finding a car. It had to be Oxford White with Blue OTT (Over The Top) stripes to replicate the iconic original colours.
It had to be a GT350R.
It had to have the Electronics Package, which adds back A/C, radio, nav, dials etc.

They are rare and every dealer was asking an ADM (Addirional Dealer Markup) which is allowed in the USA. Also dealers were told that they were not to sell GT350s outside of North America/Mexico. I eventually found a dealer in Louisiana willing to break the rules slightly and a deal was done at the end of June.
