New 930 3.0 Turbo & 3.0 Carerra tyres 205 & 225/50YR15 P7 N4

Post by Dougal Cawley »

Hi

Good old Pirelli have come up trumps again.

I have just received my first delivery of Pirelli's first foray into re making the P7 tyres of the mid '70s, with 2 new tyres that are homologated by Porsche with the N4 designation

They look great, thanks for the pic. Do you or anybody else know what was factory fitted in late '76? Mine has Pirellis on the front & Dunlops on the rear, sounds odd but the grip is ok in the wet & dry. Thanks

The sizes here were fitted to a few 1976 model year Carrera 3.0s (VIN 911 66........) that came with option M395. This option included a re-calibrated speedo to compensate for the lower rolling circumference of these tyres.

1977 model year Carrera 3.0s with option M395 came with 16" Fuchs with 205/55 & 225/50 P7 tyres. In this case there was no need for a re-calibrated speedo as the 16" wheels with the low profile tyres restored the original rolling circumference.

If Pirelli remake the P7 in the 16" sizes I would definitely fit them to my Carrera 3.0

Guy - shouldn't that read 205/55 & 225/50 tyres ? (for '77 with the 16in wheels)

Interestingly, my '76 built car has the tyres mentioned above but the speedo over-reads and assume it's been there from new as l have all mot's & fsh stuff etc from day 1. Having had the car for years, l only noticed the over-reading since the introduction of those roadside read-out speed thingys and don't have a satnav wotsit

Jon,

The Porsche option codes often changed from year to year. In 1976 M395 was Pirelli P7 tyres and could be fitted to a number of 15" rims. In 1977 M395 was Pirelli P7 tyres fitted to 6&7x16 Fuchs.

Andy,

Thanks for spotting the error, I have edited the post.

Fairly sure mine are 16'' x 7 front & 8 rear, it's a sport model & the coa mentions forged alloy rims but no size, can you help solve the puzzle please? I have no experience unlike you guys. Thanks

1976 model year sport option had 7&8x15, 1977 had 6&7x16.

Only the Turbo had 7&8x16

Factory tyres on the 6&7x16 Fuchs were Pirelli P7!

Thanks for your expert knowledge sharing and sorry to hi-jack the thread. The car currently had P700-z's on the front!

Please stick some pics up once fitted - I've always thought 205/50 were under profiled and look a bit thin around the wheel.
