Surely one of you techno types can manage a translation of this, it does look quite interesting!

I think it is hot news. i have never seen such a test done on tyres for classic cars. i would suggest the investment in this tyre test was huge. i am surprised it is not reused in every Porsche magazine.

Also it is excellent of Pirelli to invest in the tooling to re make tyres to such high specifications. it is almost understandable them making the 185/70VR15 http://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/page/18 ... 36-n4.html because that actually fits other cars. but the demand for the rear http://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/page/21 ... 36-n4.html is very limited

I might ask whether the Pirelli is worth twice the cost of the Vredstein?

Or from another perspective you can buy four Continental 195/65 for significantly less than the price of one Pirelli.

I know it's not 'right' but it's more realistic for 99% of people who drive rather than invest in their cars.

I've put a set of these on my car. The Michy XWX were 15 yrs old apparently.

Having driven the CLM following sladey and Ian, all I can say is that they are a excellent tyre, loads and loads of grip round the French b-roads

Yet to try them in the wet, although the likely hood is that will never happen

Personally I think it's wonderful that Pirelli, Porsche et al invest so much in what is essentially a niche market......

.....I appreciate that they wouldn't do it unless there was a profit/kudos in it but then they are in business to make money!

I'll grimace with eveyone else at the cost but still smile that this stuff is actually available!

Well done Pirelli :)

Tyres of my 520d are £200 + ish a piece ... Yet I squirm at paying more than £80 each for a car that's is 100% times more enjoyable to drive .... I am from Yorkshire though ;)

should you buy tyres just based on cost?

Should you buy cars just based on cost?

the other point is these tyres are just not expensive at all for a top notch high specification tyre in an unusual size made by one of the world best tyre manufacturers. when you buy tyres for a modern Porsche from Pirelli or Michelin they cost more than this

I would have liked to see a modern 195/65 in the group test as a reference point.

I know the original sizes are expensive due to volumes etc, but from an outright performance perspective the comparison would be interesting.

Its simply a matter of OEM vs. Pattern part. It seem that some people will do anything to drive around on THE original Fuchs wheels for their car, sometimes even if they're cracked, yet balk at the price of the correct OEM tyres. Tyres are a consumable, verdesteins suit some, others Pirelli. If in doubt try the others next time, many 911s probably never wear out any of their tyres!
I still want a translation to read though.

It would have been worse on these cars.

yes a 195/65R15 will suit a later car that is set up to suit this later development in tyre carcass construction, where as these earlier cars will suit and handle better with the carcass structure that the Cinturato CN36 offers. I would bet that the geometry of the later cars that fit the 195/65 tyres is slightly adjusted to suit the more modern carcass design.

I would expect a more modern tyre to give better straight line braking in the dry, and less wheel spin in a straight line, definitely in the dry, but maybe in the wet too. but i would only expect it to improve straight line dry performance. But in every other way i would think the CN36 will be better than a modern tyre on a http://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/page/porsche-tyres of the '70s.

That is why Porsche have homologated this new production of the CN36 for these cars. they haven't just done it to make a few quid.

These tyres are just not expensive.

Dougal, no offence was intended. I notice you also sell the vredstein. My question was serious, it seems to do well as a 2nd place tyre to the Pirrelli at a much lower price. I have the vredstein on my 912 and i find them very good. So if the sprint classic is 85% of the other tyre at 50% of the cost it should be considered. Matt
