If from 84 to 85 mm bore on 2.2S engine MFI mods required?

Post by RetroGuy »

I´m contemplating of putting an original spec 2.2S engine in my ´71 911T and wondered if in case I had the cylinders bored out to 85 mm (to achieve the displacement of a 911/20 2.3ST engine, hence going from 2.195 cc to 2.247 cc) the MFI pump (space cams, etc.) needed to be modified to ensure proper functionioning? All other parts (in particular the cams) would remain stock.

many thanks for your input!

Hi Stefan,

i am currently doing that exact engine spec to my 2.2s ST motor. You will need to re-calibrate the flow rates on the pump. The space cam is fine in your 009 pump. To gain any significant performance gain over the 2.2s stock motor you will need to do several expensive modifications to get near the 225-230 BHP figures of the 911/ 20 engine. Your pockets will empty fairly quickly...!

Dave, many thanks!

I am well aware that expanding the bore alone will (unfortunately ;-)) not bring me anywhere near a genuine 911/20 spec (906 cams, twin-plugging, etc.) - I just wanted to know that in case the original cylinders can be kept in the rebuild (however would have to be honed by a bit) I am not also in for a modifcation of the MFI pump.

I therefore understand that a recalibration of the flow rates is not something that requires mods on the internals of the pump?

many thanks!

Stefan
