Wrong…..nothing…..but it was definitely an “interesting” series of first drives





2 months shy of 11 years separate these images from today….in between times quite a lot has happened in life in all sorts of ways, and a boy hood dream has finally been realised….along with a fair few challenges

I remember the first time I drove the 911 as I took it to a local Porsche specialist to have the suspension set up….that was a dreadful drive….wondering what might go wrong and what that odd noise is/was……but 14 years afterwards the 911 never ceases to amaze me what an incredible car it was and still is….quite awesome…..and part of my family…I still cannot conceive of a day when I will wave it goodbye….

I hope the E Type will grow on me as much…..first impressions are limited as with a freshly built engine I am keeping her to under 3,000 revs…..the bucket seats are not great in back support low down, and I am not really keen on the skinny wheel….but I have a lovely period Nandi wheel that will be test fitted soon….the gearbox is definitely a character….on more than the odd occasion at junctions, as I drove around these last few weeks I simply could not get it into second….and synchro is limited in all gears so it seems….however the engine has endless torque so starting in third on the level is not too much of a challenge

I have completed some of the very last details…with a bespoke set of CNC cut luggage runners being made for me….this was an early 3D print test piece….(The original and more expensive style was only produced for the very first few hundred cars and is no longer available, hence me getting my own set made)



Together with small details like stickers for some of the equipment and my own version of stainless steel trims to hold the rubber bonnet weather strips in place… which naturally I had to cut and finish perfectly and include radius’s corners…..l just because….



The E is just such a very beautiful looking car…I never tire of looking at her….the alloy wheels were a calculated risk as were the modified bumpers……I am glad I chose gunmetal and also (..finally…!…) made my mind up about the sage green….the silver has a hint of green in it curiously enough so my desire to have a complimentary pair of tones seems to work


And here she is….up at Newlands Corner and the Surrey hills…..no words needed…..


















Once the windscreen went in the unexpected bonus was all that wonderful Connolly leather aroma had no where to escape to….perhaps I should not be admitting to such (oddball) behaviour but I quite like sitting the car in the garage of an evening….I don’t have to make brum brum noises….I simply relax with one of my other vices and just chill

So what’s next?

I am sure I'm not alone at all, but I feel this has been the best restoration thread on DDK.

As school boy and beyond, the E Type has been in my top 3 cars, preferably a coupe in pale yellow, GT40 and a late 60's Lotus 7 are the others.
Never been in one but have seen so many race.

You are just in time for the end of the summer, so I hope you will be out and about and post a lot more pics and experiences.
I would think the specialists you have worked with have enjoyed the journey too, esp that Barry bloke with the tinsnips!

As Bootsy says “inspiring” in every way.

Superb level of craftsmanship that befits such a beautiful design.

I had a 62 Coupe for 7 years, no where near this standard, but it was a joy to own.
