Hi,

I need some help. Fitting 74 CIS engine into 72 914. Getting it in is proving difficult. I don't want to start cutting up the trunk. It should fit in but requires some adjustments. Can anyone let me know, who has done it, what needs changing. Any help would be much appreciated.

Regards

Michael

I think moriarty on here had a CIS engine installed in one of his 914/6's.
Might be worth dropping him a PM.

Hi

I did it with a 3.0. If you are running stock CIS, even modifying the hard air elbow that goes into the snorkel still requires a small square to be cut out of the bulkhead area of the trunk. I made a small aluminium box with a removal face for access to conceal it.

Dropping the engine helps, but then makes the linkage compromised. I also modified the engine cover, removing the latch mechanism, to help snorkel clearance.

Sadly, the very best option is to lift the engine up so the bottom of the case is higher than the floor pan, so you can get a great line for your linkage, then fit carbs so you do not have to chop either the engine lid or into the trunk.

Clearly the cost is greater, but on the plus side the sound is worth it alone, and I gained 20hp going from CIS to Webers.

Sorry I can't take any pics at pres as the 914 is buried under parts for the other project,

Cheers
Wayne

Thanks JW and Wayne- had an email exchange with Maurice. My problem is now restricted to lowering the engine ever so slightly. Might be tricky with the Patrick Motorsports mount I have which is the weld in type, in addition to the Turbo Thomas headers which are quite large. We will keep at it.

I am not familiar with their mount Michael, however I made various spacers and re-engineered mounts to lower the motor so you should be ok.

Keep at it!

Michael, I may have a spare bolt in mount if the PM one doesn't work out.

If you do have to make a cut out plan it carefully, make it more than big enough, do it once and use a plasma cutter if available. That way the removed section can be butt welded back in and no permanent harm done.

Got it in for a trial run. All fits. Thanks for the help.

If I could work out how to post a picture I would.

Would love to see pics if you figure out how to post them...there is a 'tutorial' on how to do it somewhere on the site. You'll need photobucket or similar account setup ideally. I will be running into similar engine mounting issues 'soonish'. I do like the idea of negating the CIS clearance issues by converting to carbs as per Wayne's suggestion..just a question of $$$!
