Durant Mirror...

Post by Darren65 »

Larger type Durant mirror with gasket in very good condition, I would say 8/10.

Chrome has light surface scratches which may polish out. Some very minor marks and one very small 'ding' which is hardly noticeable. Mirror is in generally very good condition with a few minor blemishes. Gasket is soft and useable.

I'm no expert on these mirrors and have never researched them so please correct any errors or omissions.

Asking £135 plus postage.

Darren - there shouldn't be any chrome on your mirror - it's stainless steel.

Sorry but it's one of my 'pet hates' - along with people referring to the bright anodised parts found on our cars as 'chrome' ...

Hi all,

Can anyone comment if this is this correct for LHD 71 2.2s?

Cheers

Hi Roger,

I'm not exactly sure when the large Durant mirror replaced smaller one but think it was 68MY.

The larger mirror advertised here was fitted on LHD models from 68 through to the start of 72MY when they changed to a small rectangular mirror. RHD cars retained the round Durant mirror until some time in 74, there was never a RHD small rectangular mirror and the round one remained until the large flag mirror was introduced.

I'd appreciate if I can be corrected if there are any errors to the above?

Photos below of the 1970 700-mile 2.2S and an original paint low mileage 71 car, both sporting the large Durant mirror.....

I thought you said you weren't a mirror expert Darren?
Sounds like a fairly good summary to me.

I think your mirror is one of the excellent reproductions available. Would you agree?
There is precious little to distinguish the originals from some of the reproductions now but the position of those stars is the giveaway. However, no one is going to notice that except the mirror anoraks.

Looks like an excellent mirror for the price and i agree it fits the models you describe above.

Regards
Mike

I think it's original Mike, why would you suggest reproduction?

The mirror came from my E and was on the car in the 80's, not sure if there were reproductions around then?

Well, you can't argue with that provenance. It could well be original. Who's going to worry about the position of a few stars and absolute originality. Certainly not Sladey anyway.

For your information here is a definite original. I'll let you be the judge.

....I'm not so sure Mike, the font in your photo looks all wrong and decidedly suspect.....Chinese maybe?

I'd say with the quality, feel, weight, construction and history of my mirror I'm 99.9% certain it's the real deal........in fact after doing some more research and looking at many identical original mirrors I'd say I've sold mine too cheaply.

Well done on the sale Darren. I think it was a little cheap but someone has a nice deal so everyone is happy.
I only made comments because you invited them. I have a similar mirror coming up for sale soon so I will be interested in your opinion on it when you see the pictures.

Mike

Only teasing Mike; I must say I do agree with you regarding price, I did a little research on the back of your post and things certainly seem to have moved on a fair bit since I last looked a couple of years ago. $300-$400 seems to be readily achievable on mirrors not as nice as this. Should make for a happy buyer :)

Technically I should have kept this and fitted it to my RHD 72T as the new Porsche flag mirror didn't exist in period!.......I wonder what owners of 73 LHD cars with small flag mirrors did if they wanted a passenger side mirror fitted?........probably had to fit a round Durant on both sides.

I've got Durants on both sides on my 72 as the car was ordered that way. Not sure why they bothered fitting the extra one on the passenger side as impossible to see from the driving position!
