Ever since Porsche released the RS and RSR editions of the 911 in late 1972, they were always in high demand. In fact, Porsche ended up increasing production to allow for nearly triple the initial homologation production requirements. This popularity ushered in a wave of clones over the past 4-decades both good and bad. However, it takes a special eye and background to build a unique and high quality example.

The owner of this RSR worked for the Porsche Exclusive – Personal Design program during the time the car was built. Although this was his own independent project, his critical eye and demand for quality embedded within many Porsche employees certainly found its way into this example. He even had the U.S. donor car shipped to Germany for the build. When completed, it was tested/tuned at the Nürburgring/Nordschleife before shipping back to Southern California.

While helping design bespoke Porsches for exclusive clients, this owner wanted something special for himself that embodied the spirit of the original with the benefit of newer Porsche developments. He hired the shop called Scuderia Eleven GMBH, which is located in Germany’s Rhineland region. This company is one of the more recognized 911 builders in that area and growing fast. Originally, the owner was going to build a car from a long-hood 911 but the build team convinced him that the chassis benefits of a later Carrera would make a much better platform for the build. So, the search began.

He found a beautiful 1987 G50 Carrera coupe from North Carolina. It was very dry, straight, and complete…the perfect candidate. After purchasing, it was shipped directly to Scuderia Eleven for the build. While traversing the Atlantic Ocean, the owner and builder worked on a strategy. The goal wasn’t to build another vintage race 911 for the street, but something that was more livable on a daily duty without loosing the spirit and fun of an early 911. They had their work cut out.

They had to shed a lot of weight from the heavy G-body 911. Everything came apart and the car was stripped down to the bare metal and put on a rotisserie. Handcrafted steel RSR flares (real ones) were butt welded to the rear and carefully fitted. They employed the benefit of modern FRP for the front of the car and roof. Not only would it bring down the weight, but it would also help lower the center of gravity = better handling. The key challenge with using these materials is the extra time required to get the right fitment. Each panel is purchased in a much larger piece and then carefully cut down to the right size. The end result is excellent body gaps and a fit that looks like handcrafted aluminum but with the strength of steel. Plus, they got the weight below 2,300 pounds.

Other than the doors and engine block, everything else on the car is new. The goal with the motor was to give it more power but not loose the soul of driving an early 911. The motor was partially disassembled and carefully inspected. The engine was rebuilt from the heads up to 930 specification using 964 RSR camshafts, revised engine management, and custom exhaust system. New valve guides and seats were installed as well as having the cylinder heads machined. New bearings and seals were included. Furthermore, a stock system with catalytic converter was retained so the car would pass the strict California smog requirements…yes, this RSR is California street legal and currently registered. For the final touches, the engine and bay were completely refinished and detailed in a subtle look with plenty of attitude.

To finish the project, a restored set of 4-piston 964 brakes was installed on the front with a brake bias system control and a new full Bilstein street performance suspension system. The original numbers matching G50 5-speed gearbox was rebuilt and mated to a WEVO shifter system.

Since this RSR was intended for street use in California, a full modern air conditioning system was installed to make long drives a lot more pleasant. It truly is the perfect blend of street performance and sport purpose.

To finish off the look, a custom set of correct size 15x9 and 15x11 Fuchs wrapped in Michelin TB tires (they need to be replaced soon and a fresh set is available) with an RSR frosted finish was fitted to the car.

The cockpit is a simple, yet elegant design. It is pure Porsche. From the soft covered dash to the supple leather Momo Prototipo steering wheel and houndstooth sport-style seats, everything is new and has a nice quality feel. The car comes with a set of new lap belts for street use and a Schroth 4-point street harnesses for more aggressive driving if the new owner wishes them installed. Or, a new standard 3-point belt is available.

Naturally, with this special build, several print and online magazine articles from around the world have featured this RSR.

Once finished, Scuderia Eleven took the car to the Nürburgring for final testing and tuning. Then, it was carefully shipped back to Southern California.

The exterior looks amazing with excellent panel fitment. The Gulf Orange paint is a perfect match. There are a couple hairline cracks on the rear bumper that are hidden by the decklid (see pics). It will be repaired before delivery to the new owner. The interior is just as fresh with brand new reproduction sport seats with houndstooth inserts. All the gauges, switches, etc. operate properly.

California registration and smog is good until September 2016.
