Johnny

They look like the glow in the dark

I'm pretty sure that there has to be some tread on the tyres though.

Anyway, I'm taking up Mike's (210bhp) offer of the use of his cookies  . Probably try and get second hand road/race tyres with some tread.

Margaret, if Mike is loaning you some cookies Ill donate a set of used Yokohama ao48 scrubbed track tyres for your event.
I have a few sets from old races etc and they will be great and FOC to you.
They'll need a little road miles etc but ill talk you though it.
Ive got 205/50/15 & 225/50/15 so well make up a set that fits car but these should help to get a second or so off your time....and they are road legal....OK?

No sign of entries opening yet..

Margaret can you answer a couple of questions for me?

First, how strict was scrutineering? Did they check labels on your helmet and racesuit? How strict were they about the car and paperwork?

Second, how much time do you get to warm up your engine and gearbox? This is my main concern, thrashing the car cold up the hill..

Wondering about running the 964 on the saturday (if they'll take it) and the 356 on the Sunday.. :)

Johnny

I can answer the second question. The paddock is beside the start line and you are called with sufficient time to warm the car up and if that's not enough for you you can run the car in the paddock.

Hi Johnny

Brendan is quite right :) Once the announcement for our group his heard, we get the cars moving slowly out the paddock to head for the line up to start.
We usually wait about 20 minutes or so in the queue before you get to your start line. I keep Kit's engine running the whole time.

I just learned last year that you don't have to zoom away the minute the green light shows either  Once you see the green light, you can prepare your car, Boydy has got me to get Kit to sort of squat then foot off the pedal at the right moment and I'm off :bounce: :compress: then its all over far to quickly. Think they should make the track longer

The scrutineers check your race suit is in date (i think) and your helmet has to have a in date MSA sticker applied which costs £2. This the scrutineer does if everything OK.

I'm not to sure about your 964 though. You may be safer contacting the organiser for info on that one.

I have been checking their website every day to apply.

You have got me all excited now, I won't be able to sleep tonight

Thanks Margaret and Brendan.

Yes I'll see if I can twist the organisers arms with the 964..hopefully if they let a 944 Turbo silver rose run the last couple of years they will look kindly on an entertainingly noisy 4wd 911.

Thats good to hear that they dont call you straight from the paddock to the start line..the 356 takes ages to get up to temperature at idle. There is a bit of access road by the start line isnt there so hopefully I can get some warmth into the transmission too.

Sounds like I need to raise my projected budget for race wear. :(
If they are needing stuff within date limits I'd better unwatch all the stuff on ebay for 30 quid and go back to the blue book.

Sounds like Boydy has installed launch control in kit!! Hope you can do it Raymond. And there is the chance of Mike Bainbridge in his Terrapin special, although that is mini + BMW powered so we wont be speaking to him.. :P

Oh Dear! I can feel another long trip North coming on again......................
Trouble is, it's the same week-end as our local event at Wiscombe Park

Johnny - regs and things - do read the Blue Book carefully before buying Race suit , helmet and gloves. If any of these are not the right spec, you will not be allowed to compete. Also, If buying a new helmet, I would advise you to buy one with HANS posts. Head and neck restraints are compulsory this year in all but road-going and cars manufactured before 1st Jan 1977, but I would expect them to become required across the board in time. Also, be careful with noise - max 108 dB(A) at 0.5m for hillclimb and sprint events.

You're right about warming the car up first, I have always set my car at fast idle on the hand throttle, 2500 - 3000 rpm until the oil temp is at least 80 deg C. before a run. Uses a bit more fuel, but our engine is still in one piece (as I type!) nearly 30 years later.......... 8)

Bo'ness usually don't allow slicks, so the orange ebay specials probably won't get through.......
More important than anything, go out to enjoy it, and prepare to be addicted, it's a great sport involving a brilliant collection of interesting, mad people!

Forgot to say, remember to make and fit a timing strut (Blue Book S 10.9) to each car, if you are going to bring both. Without this, you may not be allowed to run, and you definitely won't get an official time for your runs..........

Hi all, I too have been hillclimbing for many years and it is great fun. The HANS post advise is very wise, buy a helmet that fits properly very difficult by mail order), meets all the standards and then some, you never know where you might find yourself in a few years. I was surprised to need these as i only ever raced vintage stuff, then a mate bought a Mini and suddenly i was borrowing a HANS device and fitting the posts, now DIY post installation is nearly banned. My helmet still has another 2 years tho. Timing strut is soooo easy to forget, also you will need a properly secure battery, a breather catch tank on the engine (size spec in blue book) and good throttle return springs on each carb spindle. Fire extinguisher rules vary but buy and fit one of the correct size and type, if you don't need it on the day at scrutineering hey ho. Scrutineering is important, and a straightforward pass makes the day easy, a fail is a nightmare of on the day bodgery and pleading, or end of event.
Good luck, W

Posted today on their FB page:

Due to unavoidable delays with official paperwork we are currently unable to publish our Supplementary Regulations and therefore cannot accept entries for the hill climb competition. The situation is out of our hands but we hope it will be resolved fairly soon.
In the meantime anyone wishing to register their interest in entering the hill climb should contact the Competition Secretary, Alex Hazelwood, via our website with details of their name, address and car.
The Bo'ness Hill Speed Climb is attracting growing interest throughout the historic motorsport scene in the UK and places at this year's event are likely to be highly sought after. Last year our paddock was full and, even though we have extended its capacity by some 25%, we feel that we may be oversubscribed this year. Entrants pre-registering will be more likely to be allocated an entry.
