Fuel Tank coating

Post by leewiffen »

I need a new fuel tank and intended to buy a Dansk repro tank....good value methinks, unless you tell me otherwise http://www.tech9.ms/classic-parts/drive ... 1615600100
However I was thinking maybe I should coat it in some sort of grey, rubbery, flexible, stoneguard textured style paint? I have a 69 LWB 912
Any thoughts, advice, products ?

what year is your 911?

Euro car parts, sell the the early tanks for 160 + Vat at the moment. Thats a very good price. Dansk, no internal baffeles, but cheap. ECP 879 33 0011 (Dansk 1684100500).

Someone else can put me right, but from my limited obervations, ive noticed that sometime from 68 - 72 the fuel tanks turned from black to grey, but ive no idea when.

Use a black stone chip, wurth underbody grey is what i would use for the grey (its a grey stonechip with a close colour to OG), and any black for black. For the ultimate in protection, i coated the tank in a epoxy primer first, and then the stone chip on top. That will last a very long time. Get a new fuel tank seal around the base of the tank.

I think you will find that the tanks were black in 1969. When doing tanks in grey we use 3M Two Part Sprayable Sealer 08823, this gives a smooth, "bobbly" surface, which is very similar to the original finish on grey tanks.

Nick, I am pretty confident having seen some original unrestored 69 fuel tanks they were grey, they do appear to be darker grey than the later tanks though. Of course the boot area would have been painted black

It was probably a good idea to look at my own tank....doh !! Just back from my store and yes it's black with a textured black paint. Regarding the baffles, I assume that is to prevent "slap" where the fuel rolls around destablising the front end. Anyone have any experience of the Dansk creating a noticeable loss of front end stability?

Where some scraping has occurred underneath the tank is grey, so I assume they were all grey prior to being treated with the stone chip. Mine also seems to have a mastic seal, is this original?

Lee, it should have a gasket between the tank and the body to prevent ingress into the boot area, still available to buy, part number 901.504.932.20

Sorry Jonathan - should have mentioned they use a special gun to apply (with a compressed air supply). Gun looks like a schultz gun, but isn't. About £30 I think unless you can borrow one (like I did)
