R rated wet dream (911R, 911RS, 911RSR)
Back at New Year 2013/14 I decided whilst hugging and kissing a load of strangers that my New Years resolution was to build a 911R , 911RS and 911RSR to join my existing 914/6GT. My life would be complete
When I woke up feeling somewhat the worse for wear I thought, that wasn't a half bad idea.
Unfortunately my start point was having none of the shells and none of the engines ! so this was always going top be a long term project.
I wanted to build all to my own lightweight specification but it took nearly 12 months to firm up on the spec for each car as some of the key pieces started to fall into place
So the final wet dream vision is thus
1968 swb 911R 2.0 ali case twin plug rally car in orange with white - full lightweight stage rally original period R spec. Bit like this -
with a touch of this in narrow body 2.0 sylie
1973 2.7RS lightweight factory spec road/rally car with full cage, etc. in chartreuse green with black
Bit like this -
1973 2.8RSR wide body twin plug ultra lightweight race/track car with full suspension/chassis upgrades a la Elephant Racing and Rebel Racing. In GP white with black and as much stiffening and lightweight bits as I can throw at it.
Bit like this -
Unfortunately my beautiful Gulf Blue '66 911 road rally car has had to go in the process to help pay for the others and is now living life to the max as an Arrive and Drive rental rally car for the Historic Endurance Rally Association. I enjoyed that car a lot and won several events in it, but it was too good a complete steel car to justifying turning it into a lightweight 911R. Also have for sale an aluminium body works TR4 full stage ready rally car if anyone is interested. Prety unique car with a heap of successful rally history going back >25 years if anyone is interested. A truly unique car.
More to follow.

Re: R rated wet dream (911R, 911RS, 911RSR)
Things didn't start off too well. I was lucky to find a swb ex rally car for the 911R in need of full resto. What wasn't so lucky was the state of it after dipping. More holes than a colander.
Here it was pre dipping while it still was recognisable as a car
And on it's way to being dipped

Re: R rated wet dream (911R, 911RS, 911RSR)
Pre dipping we knew it was a rusty shell but I wasn't prepared for how bad it was. The history of previous repairs was extensive and pretty much every patch had corroded around it's edge making every original hole 10X bigger. Here are a few pre - dipping pictures. I should have seen it coming

And then after dipping - the horror story went full feature length - Be prepared. Estimating The number of individual holes is a bit like estimating the number of Smarties you can fit into Wembley

Blimey Andrew!! I know you explained to me the state of the shell at CATC but I think even Barry will be shaking his head in disbelief at that shell.

Re: R rated wet dream (911R, 911RS, 911RSR)
Undeterred I set about finding all the panels to repair it. About 60 panels so far and counting, and that still leaves a lot of areas that need hole by hole repair such as the .
I have all the panels below but that still leaves lots of areas that need hole by hole repair such as parts of the rear inner wings not being replaced, rear chassis legs, rear seats, rear parcel shelf, etc.
2x A posts
2x B posts,
2x rear arch extensions (R style)
2x rear torsion tube hole through wing
6x torsion tube end chassis sections
1x torsion tube
2x Front inner wings
Front slam panel
Front cross member internal reinforcement
3x Floor sections
4x other floor repair sections
2x rear screen corner repair sections
2x front bumper mounts
rear cross member
2x rear light housing
under screen scuttle
2x front screen lower corners
2x fuel tank support infills
2x front lateral reinforcements
2x inner sills
2x outer sills
2x heater tubes
1x roof
These below will all be in fibreglass as per 911R
2x front wings
2x rear wings
2x doors
engine lid
bonnet
The car is still sat on a rotisserie as it was when it came back from the dippers. Can not consider staring the work until it is on a jig (for obvious reasons) and I'm still trying to source one. Might be getting close so finger crossed work might be able to start sooner rather than later. Watch this space. Lazarus will walk again !

Re: R rated wet dream (911R, 911RS, 911RSR)
Next along came the wide bodied RSR shell which was a part completed project in need of some direction. I first saw the car at end September 2014 (how time flies). Then started a protracted negotiation with the previous owner. It didn't take long to agree some principles but I had to take on word that some of the previous work had been completed to a reasonable standard on which to build on. Well before swaping any money and documents it became clear that certain aspects of the car had been well and truly bodged together (not that I think the previous owner knew this).
At first sight the car looked quite complete and just needed finishing including engine, some repaint and couple off very minor rust patch repairs. The poor quality of the paint job should probably rung alarm bells as soon as I saw it. I wasn't prepared for what I found.
Some pictures to follow.

Andy - that shell is pretty poor - reminds me of my own 66 shell - are there any solid panels? Look like every panel needs repairing / replacing.
