66 SWB 912 full resto

Post by Robind »

After many months of searching we found the ideal candidate for our first Porsche and purchased this great little 66 sunroof 912 from the States in June
Finally after tracking her across the pond for 6 weeks she arrived at London docks on Friday and is now back in the garage awaiting full strip next weekend
Plan is full restoration back to original colour of slate grey and I will concentrate on the chassis/body while leaving the mechanics to the experts such as Max at Revival
Opinion on here seems to be that chassis parts are best purchased from Restoration Design for quality fit and Max for the engine work, used parts :?:
Lots of help from fellow members I'm sure on finish types and sourcing parts but really looking forward to the build

The best panels come from Porsche, anything else will require plenty of work to get a good fit.

thanks for that, I have read on here about the different suppliers positive and negative and presumed rightly or wrongly that Restoration Design where the best of the rest after geniune???
TBH we are going to try and use much of the original as possible

I have to admit the red interior does look pretty sweet, I hope you can save it. Not sure what the og owner of mine was thinking with brown leatherette!

Good luck with the project, 66 slate grey 912's rule.

Lovely car! I'd love an early "early" with a sunroof! Less than 100 known 912 sunroof coupes i've read somewhere. Good luck!

Really do try and save as much as possible of the interior. tidying up the old bits goes long way. Repro doesn't come close to the feeling of "disassembled, cleaned, straightened and refitted with new springs." :)

Don't worry guys I am a simperthetic restorer and will always try and keep restore rather than new restore :)
the interior is in good shape so we should be OK for keeping most of it

I had a feeling she was fairly rare as there has been a lot of interest in the car before we have even started, even had a guy in States asking if we could ship it back

Looks like a lovely project. I'm part-way through a 912 myself, although I wouldn't call it a restoration - more a resuscitation.

Which platers are you using in Birmingham?

Your own project is a pleasure to read and full credit to your work 8)

We use The Birmingham Plating Company but as you may be aware there are plenty of them in the area and we have also used Broadway Brass in the past

Few more late nights and the car is basically stripped, anyone in their right mind would now say its gone to far to save as the floor seemded to be made up of an old bonnet and a sheet of steel, the sills are fibregalss and the front mines just filler :(

However not in my nature to give so easily and will save as much as possible, these are rare cars and after spending the afternoon with Max going through the totally orginal never apart engine this one seems to be very rare indeed.

anyway heres a few snaps of the horror story :crybaby:
