engine rebuilders

Post by jonat127 »

Down in the far eastern reaches of kent we don't seem to have any porsche specialist workshops, at least none that I know about.
I am refurbishing a 2.4T engine to put into my 914-6 conversion.
I want to do most of the work myself but there are a few bits that I need inspecting by an expert.
I am happy to travel to a suitable expert and deliver the parts and talk about the necessary work and of course the list of other parts I will need to complete the work.
So, my question is, where should I go? The nearer the better. Can you knowledgeable folks suggest someone I can talk to who will be understanding of a competent amateur!
Clearly I'm going to spend a fair bit on parts and a little on workshop time so I am not just looking for free advice.

Hi Jon

Only been in this part of Kent for a yr or so, I recently had my engine rebuilt, I decided to use a guy in Oxfordshire, mainly on the recommendation of other DDKers. Since being down in deepest darkest Kent, I have managed to make contact with a couple of garages which specialise in older cars, may be worth while giving either of the below two guys a call:

Steve - Goss Hall Classics (specialising in porsche & mercedes) based near Ash 01304 812379
Richard - Rose garage ( Richard races old formula 1 cars, based in Sandwich) 01304 617207

I'm sure if either can't help they will be able to recommend someone in the area

Regards
Mark

Give Lee at Octane Garage a call, he's not far from you in Crowborough East Sussex.

He has plenty of experience with Air-cooled 911 Engine rebuilds, and is pleasant to deal with.

I've got no experience of 911 engine builders but can agree with Jon that Lee is a helpful, knowledgeable & approachable chap.
He's helped me with a 996 targa roof alignment & ECU fault.
Plus he has an advertisement banner & supports DDK - give him a call.

Jon,
You could give Dan Simpson a call. He's a fine rebuilder of flat 4 VW engines, but I know he has experience with 6cylinders as well.

His work is very highly regarded. You may have already heard of him being a VW man yourself. He's also based in Ash.

Dan's number 01304 812741. (Landline is best.)

Others may have had different experiences, but my experience of 911 Classic in East Sussex was truly shocking. So a neg reference there.

Nick Fulljames at Redtek is one of the masters of the 911 air cooled world, but is probably too busy for the help you are looking for.

Well done Jason, no beating around the bush, could save a forum member a lot of hassle.

Negative for Specialist Vehicle Preparations and R to RSR in Devon - shocking engine work for me, still costing me money

I did visit Chilham sports cars once with my 944. Although I didn't receive particularly bad service I just felt a little bit ripped off.
I went to Goss hall classics yesterday as I was in the area. What a lovely chap Steve is. Although he cannot help me directly he has given me a lead for local engine builders that he uses.
I will check out the other suggestions too.
Thanks again to everyone

+1. Top bloke and true enthusiast. Full rebuild on my 3.0, pragmatic approach kept costs sensible.
