Last year I put my 2.7RS rep up for sale. It was a more agonising "shall I, shan't I?" decision than I could possibly have imagined for a mere scruffy old car. I had owned it for 5 years and I loved it. It ticked so many boxes for me - great track car with a great soundtrack, bearable long distance cruiser (with earplugs and regular stops to stretch my back and legs!), sometime race car and highlight of the school run for my daughters. It was well set up for me and I learnt how to drive it up to the limit of my ability. I'd never claim to be an expert driver but I had a few good results in VSCC events, really got to understand the rear engined, RWD layout and it brought me some fantastic memories and experiences.
It wasn't a car I could sneak out in - the residual combined smell of exhaust, oil and petrol put paid to that. Most people loved it...some thought it was 'just' any old 911 and some didn't like it at all. But in Chartreuse, everyone noticed it.
And then there were the people that my 911 ownership introduced me to...Neil Bainbridge was an inspiration and has become a great friend, DDK became an almost Pavlovian website click (a habit I just can't kick in my post-Porsche wilderness years!), and the friendly community of early 911 fans, enthusiasts and experts made ownership a real pleasure.
So why the hell sell it? I saw plenty of posts on here from people in the same position and I felt their pain! For me I just realised it was time for a new experience. I've never really seen myself as a single marque kind of guy and felt that I had done everything in the car that I wanted to do - and life's too short. I'm not an investor so shoving it in a garage under a sheet has never been an option so it was time to move on.
And then it was gone - bought by another DDK to begin its life anew. I met Andrew at BS Motorsport to say goodbye...
To be honest, I don't think there's a day goes by without me wondering whether I will regret it.
But luckily, whilst the car was up for sale, I'd been mentally spending the money so when the time came, I knew what I was looking for...
There you go...the first post on the Renault 5 Turbo2 and not a single one in sight yet...
) . Remember seeing a white turbo2 , I think in Sarlat, back when they were newish. We'd driven down in a Volvo 240GLT estate & the turbo2 was pure french car porn. Can stil picture its rear end now. Bought a machbox toy version to keep me happy
