Koni Struts and Inserts

Post by Darren65 »

For some reason I always had the idea that Koni dampers came in both standard and sports version...

...am I wrong?

That's similar to what I paid not long ago. They are adjustable, but only when fitting into strut!

Koni Sport Dampers are Top Adjustable on the front strut inserts. - They are generally painted Yellow.

The Sport insert for the 911 is has a slightly different shape at the base of the leg and may be an issue depending on the strut casing.

We have successfully fitted them into early strut casings, both Boge and Koni but they do need a small adapter to be machined up and fitted into the leg to locate them correctly.

The Rear Dampers area also available but they have an M14 mounting bolt rather than the M12 of the early damper but this is an easy fix.

The do offer a much wider adjustment range that the standard 'Red' Koni and work quite well.

Thanks Chris,

Would you happen to know parts numbers?

Yellow is fine, I need to paint them the correct red anyway!

.....I’m guessing part numbers for these would be 8641-1039Sport front and 8210-1159Sport rear?

Front: 8641-1039 SPORT

Rear: 8210-1159 SPORT

This is the 'bung' we made to fit these inserts into an early (1965) Strut casing.

The bottom of the Sport insert has a locating peg and the insert s around 4mm too short to be locked by the gland.

This 'bung' slightly raises the insert so it locks axially and radially locates the insert.

We have used them on a couple of FIA Race cars and they work quite well.

A LEDA conversion is probably better but much more costly.

Thanks for the feedback Chris.....I'm fitting 73 alluminium rear arms with an M14 mounting anyway so all nice and easy.

And big thanks for the link to DC Performance Dave...best prices I've seen :)

Pleased I can stick with my original brief and follow the 'Sports Purposes' manual which states.... 'We recommends for competition purposes that adjustable shock absorbers, for example Koni... ...should be used'......

For reference.....

Koni Classic.....

...and, Koni Sport Adjustable.....

Now all I need is the correct red colour code :)

I have to paint my struts anyway so will do them all together....Gary mentioned last week that he has a code that's a perfect match (I think he said a Vauxhall colour)....if you'd like me to do yours at the same time then let me know?....

....freebie!

I have all the details but no shocks yet. Really need to go shopping. Thanks for the offer Darren.

Forget the Red, the struts housings should be Orange. The original rears were also Orange back in the day.

Pictured. Super rare double adjustable Circa : 69-72.
