Motorcycling in India .....

Post by Cortina »

First you have to buy the bike !! (500cc Bullet - what else could I buy ? £1250 all in, inc insurance and 15 yrs road tax !)
Then upon collection - get it blessed (The Pooja)
And ride it home - keeping flowers on for as many days / miles as possible !!

More another day

Did you catch the Our Guy in India programmes which followed Guy Martin on a road trip in India? Great programme, he wants to ride that bike home!

Looking forward to the rest of your story :bounce:

Yes, yes yes. This is my idea of a holiday - I just got back from a bit of this in Thailand with my girlfriend. We were two up (+luggage!) on a similarly local bike (Honda ANF125i).

The Enfield looks awesome. Good luck :)

Thirty years ago I had a cousin who lived in Australia and decided that he would travel home to Ireland as much as possible by land. He was travelling through India on a bike and stopped at a post office to send a postcard home only to bump into a guy he knew from Castledawson (which was 20 miles from where he came from in Ireland!). Small world.

which route will you go ? North West doesn't look particularly inviting ( Iran, Afghan etc )

Good question , no idea at this point (how or when) .
Original thinking was Pakistan , Iran, Turkey ... then it's easy ... but now is not the time !

Bike was my daily transport for two years. Then I filed it under "factory store" near Pondicherry for several years.
Went back out again - flew to Delhi , then 40 hr train ride to Madras / Chennai ... picked up bike , sorted it .... then spent a month riding back to Delhi (covering most parts of India on route) .. THAT was the interesting bit. Bike currently filed under D for Delhi ...............

one of the sights seen below (it gets better !!)

The PY in the reg, is for Pondicherry (as per my bike)

He must have cold plums....

Great story, i have a (very) long term plan to ship our 1927 Austin Chummy out there and explore India in it in stages. I'm intrigued by your experiences with long term storage.

Can't wait for next installment.

Have a few more shots about what I saw getting carried on two wheels - the record no of people on a bike was 7 , anything up to about four was a normal sight.

This was taken on my route to work (approx a 20km trip each way) Pondicherry to Cudalore.
