Con rods.

I might need some new rods for my engine. I might not, the rods I have might be fine but let's pretend I do, It'll get me in the mood for thinking about how lovely my engine is going to be one day. Soon.

ish.

So it's a 1959 1600 super to be rebuilt with the lovely 83mm Shasta pistons and cylinders and more recently a Scat crank. What rods are available for these engines, does anyone have a preference ?

The rods used in the c, sc and 912 engine were the best (strongest) that porsche offered. A and b rods were different and not as good. It is not recommended to use the early rods wit a big bore kit but I'm sure its been done many times. The part number for late rods ends in 01. not that easy to find and expensive compared to early ones.

My buddy has got a set of Carrillo rods for his big bore re-build. They are true metal porn, you need two sets really, one to go in the engine and the other just to hang on the wall. I'm told they are v. strong too.

You might be interested in the very technical discussion on the registry about balancing the rods (with pistons)!! It appears to be quite important.

Where's the best place to source Carillo rods here in the UK? I think Cambridge Motorsport do them, but I wasn't sure about anyone else?

Joking aside, a very interesting thread and athough I did have to google triple beam balance, it's been a while since I sat in a physics lesson, it's extraordinary how much consideration can be given to just one consideration.

The rods I have are the R616.103.101.01 C/912 type and they may be OK, I'm just preparing for every eventuality. Carrillo.... has a nice ring to it doesn't it. conjures up ideas of race bred perfection, exquisitely finished, light, massively strong and perfectly balanced. As you say, shame they get to live in the dark. I get the feeling any Carrillo rod might be a bit embarrassed to live in my engine that only goes to the seaside on sunny days and at never more than 5000rpm. :toothy5:

I appreciate the input, thanks. I think that despite it's humble beginnings, It would be nice to make this engine a really smooth runner.

Carrillo will deal direct, especially if you are talking about a design they have already made. In UK Arrow Precision in Hinkley are very good and can work from a sample to get critical dimensions, and design something clever from that. I have had excellent experience of both companies for 1 off designs, Though CP-Carrillo supplied me with pistons, and the rods came from Arrow. Both highly recommended. No harm in getting a quote if you have a dimensionally correct rod of inferior design, you may be surprised. I certainly was: 2 off 1 piece roller rods 8 1/2 inches long! at about £225 each seemed and was very good. Avoid falling for the aftermarket VW tuning goodies market, much of this stuff seems to go into show queens that rarely get properly pushed. Also worth talking to some of the proper good engine builders that lurk around on here, Andy Prill and Ian Clarke.....you will never regret over specifying the rods..........

So....
Use late R616 rods if you have them and they're in good order/have been checked over by a competent machine shop but only to 6000rpm....some say 7000 but if you're going there don't cock about....buy some Carillos....good insurance ($1500)....happy to rev to 8000rpm all day long. Carillo use a 1/4" SPS bolt that is tiny so the rod is slimmer where it 'hits' the cam (so you can run a more exciting cam profile)....they are lovely rods and a good company to deal with....also available in UK from all good Porsche engine specialists :-)
