New toy ...
I've had a 'hankering' for a Climax-engined Lotus Elite for many years- the seeds were sown way back in the late '60's when my brother owned one - & have recently started looking more seriously.
Over the past 3-4 months I must have looked at getting on for a dozen Elites in the UK & Europe but nothing (so far) has 'ticked all of the boxes'.
Paul Matty (who, for those that don't know, is one of the longest-established/best known Classic Lotus specialists) is only 10 mins from my home so I often call in to see if anything new has come in.
I was there a couple of months ago checking out an Elite - one of 3 that they currently have for sale - & got chatting to Gordon Murray (of McLaren fame) who was collecting his gorgeous S3 Elan after having had some work done to it.
He was very enthusiastic about Elans & that got me thinking - maybe I should consider one of those as a 'stop-gap' whilst continuing my quest for an Elite ...
I looked at/tried a few at Paul Matty's - it had to be an S3 FHC - but again, nothing was exactly what I was looking for (apart from Gordon Murray's car which definitely wasn't for sale !)
Several DDKers had noticed a trend in the pictures I was posting in the 'non-Porsche picture of the day' thread & one contacted me to see if I might be interested in an Elan that he'd just acquired...
To cut an even longer story short, it turned out to be a car that I'd inquired about a few months before when it had been for sale at the Hairpin Motor Co !
So a trip down to see the car in question at Robert Barrie's storage facility in Iver Heath & the deal was done.
After that long-winded introduction, here are a few poor quality pictures taken after the car arrived earlier in the week:

Re: New toy ...
Sorry - loaded the wrong 'draft' - now corrected ...
- this is the second part:
A bit of background information on the car:
It was owned between 2007 & 2009 by motoring journalist John Simister who wrote about it regularly in Evo & Octane magazines (it was 'Pistachio' during his ownership) & when he put it up for sale* it was bought by a well-known car collector.
*At this stage the car had already been uprated including a Spyder chassis & a rebuilt engine utilising the original block and head, Omega forged pistons, big valves, unleaded-compatible seats & Cosworth L2 cams - approx 140bhp but still very tractable.
The car was immediately despatched to Tony Thompson Racing where many/most of his recommended 'fast road' brake/suspension/chassis modifications were carried out including:
New F&R brake discs
Reconditioned/uprated F & R calipers with Mintex pads
Rebuilt steering rack plus U/J replacing flexible coupling
H/D wishbones & polyurethane bushes
26R-spec driveshafts (no rubber doughnuts)
26R-spec propshaft
Steel billet rear hub shafts
H/D upper & lower diff mounts
Fast road shock absorbers & spring
Safety Devices FIA rear cage/sill bars/foot bars
FIA 4-point harnesses
Full TTR fast road exhaust system inc manifold
26R-spec aluminium radiator
26R-spec alloy swirl pot
Front oil cooler kit
Cam box breather
Full 'fast road' electronic ignition system (inc new distributor)
With the relevant labour this amounted to over £20K ...
Not content with this, the car was then sent to Option 1 in Bromsgrove which is acknowledged as one of the top body & paint specialists for fibreglass cars.
They separated the body from the chassis/running gear & set about restoring/repainting the bodywork.
The owner had decided on the colour scheme used on the original (& very rare) BRM Elans which echoed the colours of the Formula One BRM's of the period.
Once the body had been painted it was re-united with the chassis & the car received a new windscreen & re-upholstered seats.
Option 1 then presented the owner with their invoice amounting to £11k ...
Since the above work was carried out, the car has seen very little use so needs a little bit of 'fettling' - mainly sorting out a few minor electrical glitches (as is often the case with grp cars) no doubt due to lack of use.

Re: New toy ...
Andy, in the nicest possible way... I hate you.
I've loved Elans since I was a kid and always liked the idea of owning one. An Elite would be awesome, indeed, but I wouldn't be too dissatisfied with your 'stopgap' choice.

Wonderful car Andy, congrats.
I wonder though, with such a 'complete' car….what's left to satisfy the tinkerer in you?

Re: New toy ...
Yes - they are nice !!
I have had a 1971 Sprint for well over 20 years now ... it was what gave me a taste for wanting to go very quickly down closed roads !!
Has been parked up for 10 + years now .... must get it out again.
Only advice I have : If the headlight mechanism is original ...... and you are rallying down small bumpy roads at night ...... make sure your vacuum pipe does not get pulled off on some "obstruction" in the middle of the road ...... it's a very un-nerving experience !!!
With an LSD , and hydraulic handbrake ... they can be made to do lovely handbrake turns , and things ...............
