Having seen the “show me your garage” thread and been inspired by Gary’s posts making some order in the garage I got some well needed motivation to clean up mine, to get some much needed space before it’s time to collect the T.

Started off with this...
Image

A couple of trips with the family car fully loaded loaded to the recycling center provided some space, here beefy angle bar offered up across the width, 80x40 x6mm should make for sturdy enough shelving.
Image

Here first weld with the new welder, impressive performance from a single phase machine considering its 6mm material thickness. Ah and yes I did increase the wire feed for the following welds to get rid of the splatter. Image

Shelf finished and bolted up with some beefy m12 Hilti anchors, then painted in green Hammerite.

Then by chance I got an industrial shelving system from my neighbour FoC, so thought I’d have a go building some sort of workbench to fit into the minimal space available.
Image

Work in progress, 80 cm deep on the left side and only 40 deep on the right side to allow space between parked car and bench. Cross braced and bolted to the floor it sure feels like it’ll take a good wack. Just need to sort some suitable worktop now, ah and extend it to attach to the right wall...

Haha thanks Gary, the "rice" was part of the free shelving deal, take the shelving AND the rendering or nothing, chap is about as short on space as myself. Anyhow it'll come in handy come spring time to sort some bits on the house.

Now back to some Porsche content.

Had been running a cookie cutter wheel right rear for some years and have no doubt received a lot of more or less intelligent comments from non car people that the wheel didn’t match the others. Anyhow the fourth Fuchs was sent off for straightening works a long way back, actually as long ago as I’d forgotten to where I sent it... some looking into several year old emails revealed the German firm where it’d been shipped to, and sure enough they were still sitting on the wheel and agreed to quickly send it back now they knew where to send it.
So now I’ve got the wheel back home but no car, yet.

Ok let’s get back to the Metal Master’s bodywork, the torsion tube and chassis rail repairs had been completed and it was time to tackle the RH sill.

The reason for opening up the sill was that I knew the jacking support was a bit of a bodge...
Image
Image

And I’m glad we decided to do so, strengthening bracket not attached, has clearly been like this since last sill replacement job in the 90’s., not great for rigidity
Image

New strengthening bracket fabricated to correct size
Image

And properly welded in
Image

New lips welded in to have something to attach the new inner sill to, upper
Image

Lower
Image

All cleaned up and sealed before heater tube refitted and new inner sill securely attached.
Image

New kidney bowl and jacking support in place

Outer sill fitted
Image

Some local repairs were required before the cut out quarter panel could be refitted
Image

Fitted rear quarter meant that the metal work was more or less completed
Image

It all looks so easy and effortless looking at these pics but we all know it’s not! I can’t state enough how pleased I am with Barry’s work ethic, quality of work and just ease of doing business with. If only there were more Barrys in the automotive industry...

Thanks James, shame I can’t take credit for any of it as it’s all Barry’s work.

Now we’ve caught up to about Dec ‘20 and it was a good opportunity to set valve clearances before refitting the driveline. Front and Rear suspension went on without any drama as it has all been overhauled a few years ago.

Car was now drivable and easy to get onto the trailer for transport to DC Coachworks for paint.

I can’t say that I was super pleased with the old paint job. My own fault really as I went against my painter/mate’s recommendation and basically forced him to go single stage instead of modern 2 stage paint which he wasn’t at all comfortable with, and the result unfortunately proved that... my reasoning at the time was, that in my opinion single stage looks better on an old car.

As the screens were already out, and we’d finally addressed the poor RH side door gaps I pulled the trigger and agreed with Steve the painter to respray the entire car.
This time in 2 stage, which I still don’t think look as good as single, but it is my daily driver so I went for durability over looks. Have a feeling that it will be easier to match next time a panel requires paint too.

Thanks Darren, looking fwd to catch up and see your latest too, bring on CLM 2022...

Steve the painter dropped me an email the other day, Barry had been around for an inspection of the completed paint job and they were both pleased with the result, haven't got any photos but I happily take their word for it.

Doors and screens were refitted before lockdown and the rest of the reassembly will be done once they are open for business again. Not an issue for me really as collecting the car now in these COVID times is hassle to say the least.

Time for a small update.

The car has been assembled for some weeks and I've been looking at a loads of options getting it collected, I won't bore you with the details but Covid and Brexit hasn't made it easy... Anyhow, finally got in contact with Geoff from Osprey Prestige Car Transport who will deliver the car this coming Saturday.

Can't wait to have it back, need to fix a couple things like sorting the horn, get some new tires, refitting the interior etc before taking it for its safety inspection. Bring on spring 2021 :bounce:
