I was chatting to Nick Fulljames about value of his latest acquisition pending a for sale advert and at the risk of a little controversy would value a few opinions?…..



The car was built a year ago and has done minimal mileage since.

Based on a 1978 SC it was built to resemble a 74 Carrera with some modern day upgrades…..putting out a very conservative 275BHP+ it's very quick, sounds gorgeous, has an excellent set up and drives superbly….







Basic specification as follows:

Body:
Stripped to bare rolling shell, new wings fitted, headlamp washer delete, duck tail and full restoration paint finish.
Interior:
Black leather seats with new carpet set and rebuilt to early SC specification.
Chassis, Brakes and Suspension:
Reconditioned hubs, new bearings, new Bilstein shock absorbers, all new seals and bumper bellows as needed, fully reconditioned brakes with new discs and 4 pot Boxter calipers. Reconditioned 15" 7 & 8" Fuchs fitted with new Toyo T1R 205/55 and 225/50 tyres front and rear.
Gearbox:
Fully rebuilt replacing all bearings, dogs, syncros, seals and gaskets as required and fitted with a Quaife limited slip differential.
Engine:
Redtek rebuild taking 3.0SC to 3.2 with 98mm Mahle barrels and pistons with 10.3:1 compression ratio.
42mm heads and ports. New valves and guides. Twin spark ignition.
RSR cams and shot peened rockers. Rocker shaft seal kit fitted.
Case boat tailed, crank assembly balanced and ARP rod bolts fitted.
993 Dillivar head studs.
New S fan shroud and GRP black trays.
46mm PMO induction system with K+N air cleaners with flat tops.
Canems management system with custom engine loom.
Lightweight sports clutch and flywheel.
Single outlet exhaust with free flow silencer and SSI heat exchangers.

I reckon to build this car from scratch (my guestimate) would be:
Base Vehicle - £20K
Body & Paint restoration - £20K
Engine - £20K
Gearbox - £5K
Interior - £3K
Suspension, brakes, other etc - £10K

Taking build cost into account and current retail values I'm thinking an asking price of £60,000 would be about right….

….what do you think?

Dunno, real nice and sorted SC is around £25-30k and the only difference would then be the hot engine. I think it would be anywhere between £30-40k but who knows these days as the value of older Porsches is goin mental.

I think the majority of cars in this bracket are few and far between and most will need the shell sorted, just look at Jon's 89 ….. viewtopic.php?f=28&t=49433 …

…. and that's before, suspension, interior, gearbox etc….let alone engine!

I always figured if you're building a hot rod you'd start with a base car as cheap as possible, obviously balanced and within reason.

Pretty car with nice work.

But I think a really nice original SC would be more desirable than a lightly modded one for collector investor buyers and someone wanting a really good hot rod would rather have the RS/ST/R/RSR look usually so it falls between a rock and a hard place?

There are still some nice original good cars out there at sensible money, not everything needs 30k+ throwing at it. But there are some dogs at stupid money also!

Bootsy has nailed it though, he knows what it cost him and how much profit he would like so that's his price?



PS Is it original colour???

- & I think Nige's price guide for a std SC is spot on ... I was recently offered a 'mint' (& I mean mint) one-owner '79 SC for £30k (but could almost certainly have got it a bit cheaper).

Not certain on the colour but think so, would have to check.

And for the person that asked, no I'm not on a commission!……Nick generally sell his cars through referral and those that come into his business. He's rubbish at marketing. I'm just happy to help a friend and there's nothing wrong with doing a good turn for the person building your engine!

I didn't Jon - I wasn't looking for an SC (they don't do anything for me I'm afraid) but did debate whether to buy it to 'flip' but didn't think there was much profit to be made.

If it had been one of the more striking colour combinations (it was Metallic Beige) I might have been more tempted.

I tend to agree with Jason The market loves the early look for hot rods, I'm in a similar position with my own 3.5 IB, which is even more radical than this one. But, having said that, the Lime Green one that Tuthill built a few years ago, and was featured in 911 World in 2008 sold last year for IRO of £50K+ didn't it

Happy to let my old backdate go for 50K if anyones asking..............;-0)

I think the problem with this car is that it's neither one thing or the other.

From a hot rod point of view in the first instance it's the wrong colour, you need something vibrant, unusual or God forbid trendy like grey, not white.
Then some stripes, special wheel finish and decals of some sort, then do something with the interior, seat inserts and door panels, just be different.

If however the point was a 'Q' car of some type, looks like an SC then blows people away with the engine, then you have to keep it bog standard from
the outside, so why the ducktail and why lose the headlight washers, a great period original feature, hope someones kept them!

As for the engine, I'm sure it makes good power but not sure about the red shroud, the engine is what's special here it's something unique so give it
something different, fibreglass or a carbon fibre one for instance would've looked great. I think the fan with it's SC double belt pulley looks a bit naff
and the twin coils on the cross member look odd to me being centered as opposed to offset to the right, and still with the coils, put some heatshrink
on the exposed wires to the terminals, it would look a lot better.

All in my humble opinion of course!
