Project Junior...108 L

Well I bought one...it's a 1958, Junior 108 L or should I say it will be eventually... :lol:

Firstly a huge thanks to Mr John Hearn who is a mind of information and has patiently replied to every email and conversed on numerous occasions, a true gent, thanks John.

Then there's Gill..(vwgillybilly) he's kept me on track when things got sticky and must be sick of the whatsapp but never complained..thanks Gill.

Right.. I could have bought the finished article but there's no fun in that for me personally and I enjoy the thought of saving another one. This one should keep me amused over a couple of winters and eventually blossom. Ok hold on tight..

It won't run but I'm a happy chap....lord knows what they were thinking when whoever decided on the paint job.... :wink:

Started the strip down, hood, main instrument body panels, wings will go for work once I've stripped it to the chassis and had everything soda/glass bead blasted. Most bearings are shot so will be replaced, some gearbox and hydraulic work required and a host of other jobs. The parts list grows by the hour as expected...some pics

Final pic with rear wings, wheels, bonnet and loads of other bits removed. Most bolts/nuts etc were seized as expected and one of the rear wheels weighs a ton so god knows what it's filled with.... I'll post more as I go if anyone's interested.. :wink:

The bonnet looks like it will need a bit of work!

Might be filled with water - a common trick for gaining traction!

Thanks guys, fair to say the bonnet needs a fair bit of work but as you know it's a big part of the finished look so has to be right. Believe it or not if it had been original paint I would have done everything needed and left it original paint for a while....

Your right the tyre is filled with water, used as ballast but the other is air.... :lol:

Found a crack in the rear axel tube today so one on its way from Germany (hopefully).. Oh the joys of rebuilds....

The hydraulics need sorting as it's locked in position and need it to run so I've rigged a temp starting trigger as the wiring needs complete replacement but still having starting issues. Once I ensured heat and fuel were ok I ended up removing the injector...

Tested this morning and it's performing like a water pistol not an injector so a replacement ordered today which should sort the issue...

More stripping today, a few more evenings and it's almost ready to go for blasting before I tackle the mechanicals, gearbox etc.. As it's 56 years old I was pleasantly surprised how the tin work has held up, need to replace the battery tray and the odd patch to sort plus a bit of re shaping and we're all good. Tyres have been removed from the rims and currently away being blasted ill coat in primer for now.

Fuel tank out loads of crud inside and out but otherwise ok..

Inside and outside the instrument hood to sort but generally good rust wise..battery carrier shot and will sort a replacement..

Chassis etc is sound enough full of French soil and various oddments all cleaned out..

Well Adrian I don't think you will regret it if you do get one...I have absolutely no need for one but totally enjoying the experience and as always in the Porsche world lots of helpful people...:)

Stripped the fan housing which is goosed so need to find another two sections. Removed the fan securing ring with a puller as it was fast on. The fan had been rubbing for some time as you will see in the pics but no real damage to the fan in real terms.
Removed the rest of the engine tinware and wing brackets etc so another productive few hours, have to say it almost took as long cleaning up but it's worth it as I hate walking back into a mess for the next session....I know..I'm a fussy bugger.. :)

Decided on a couple of hours a night if possible to keep the momentum going... My hydraulics are stuck fast in the up position, as it's been stood for years I found what I expected which was water contamination and by the looks and positioning of some of the fixings someone has had a quick look in the past and decided to leave it be?

Drained the oil, removed the pipes, removed the front pump and complete rear system. I'll strip it down and look for the obvious piston sticking but other than that I will send to a specialist for assessment.

Wanted to see some improvement rather than stripping and de greasing so removed the tyres which were not only odd sizes (front) but totally shot and blast the rims ready for primer. One front rim had a really bad dent and needed reshaping and eventually had to blast the rims three times to get a reasonable finish...replacement tyres fitted next week.

Split the rear rims before blasting and adding primer so I'm fairly happy the way they have turned out..
