Are there strict guidelines regarding the visibility of the welded harness mount points for FIA certified cars.
Nearly all the ST cars i have seen have the captive nut plates surface welded on the tunnel and the inner sill location.

I am at the stage of installing these plates on my car and wondered if there is any reason why these can't be welded within the inner sill structure whilst i have them open.

Are you in active dialog with your local FIA technical expert during your build or are you thinking you might get the car certified at some point in the future?

i was just trying to comply as much as possible during the build of my car as i may apply for a technical passport in the future.
I understand via Robert Barrie that the main issue is the roll cage. I have several pictures of original ST cars that have recently been restored with the visible plates, so was also curious as to the reason, hence the question.

It has been a while but from memory the plates for harness eye attachment points have to cover a certain surface area and be a certain thickness. A similar principle applies to the plates where the roll cage attaches to the shell. If the plates you are talking about are hidden in the sill and not visible then you will not be able to prove you meet the standard without opening up the sill.

I have purchased approved harness plates. I will put them surface to cover all angles.

I was told that welding in the harness plates is a bad idea and have always just had them behind the steel.

Steel will always start to rip apart along the weld a bit like a dotted line.
