engineering question
afternoon all
I bought one of the Wevo "SL Superlight" gearknobs for my hotrod mainly because I love the look of it
as seen here: http://wevo.com/Products/ShifterProduct ... SLKnob.htm
what Wevo describe as "tactile" i'd describe as like changing gear holding a cheese grater
before I consign it to use as a paperweight, can anyone recommend a process that would smooth off the harsh edges and leave it lovely and rounded and nicer to hold?
some kind of surface treatment / shot blasting / machine polishing?
cheers

Re: engineering question
By a hand held rotary de burrer from an engineers supplier and use it to cut a nice chamfer on each hole. I'd bet its anodised so it will need stripping and re anodising after or have the anodise stripped then de-burr it then bead blast or polish. If you polish it you will get problems with a mop cutting away leading edges of any hole it goes over though........Buy a wooden one !!

Re: engineering question
Looks nice, I presume it's the edges of the holes that are left sharp from machining ?
I'd get a small half round diamond file and spend an evening just easing the edges, then give it a tickle with a roll of 400 wet and dry, licking frequently.
Mike.

I would try a hard rubbing with scotch brite pads such as these: http://www.3mdirect.co.uk/scotch-brite- ... tAodyBoAIg
Re: engineering question
Hi,
Have you thought about tumble polishing/de-burring? If you google "tumble deburring" suppliers are listed.
When I was an apprentice we used machines like this to finish compressor blades that were machined from solid - if you've ever looked in a gas turbine you wouldn't want to do them by hand!! (lots and lots of them!) Quite a gentle process, I think.
No idea how much a 1 off would cost to do though...
Neil

Re: engineering question
A gentle deburring with a NOGA deburrer on each hole should do the trick. They have an S shaped blade that swivels in the handle. Very efective and easy. If you have a blackened knob, so to speak, you will go through the colour. Type NOGA into ebay. Plenty there. W

Re: engineering question
I've got the wevo on my G50 box but wasn't wild about the shift stick or knob - looked a bit Star Wars for me. I got my original stick and welded a lump of metal onto the bottom so it would fit into the wevo shifter, then stuck a 917 knob on. Original looking stick and knob but interesting wevo gubbins underneath.
I've got a smooth wevo knob that I'll be selling at some stage

The simple things you see are all complicated

Full lace gauntlets for me, there is no substitute for superior grip and the open material design puts a stop to any sweaty palm moments.
