I wish we took more time to appreciate the surrounding - more food and coffee breaks would have been great. The stops we had were great fun, exchanging notes, banter and the food was really good.
The more trips I do and possibly the older i get , I think this is more important than people realise. Sometime you need to stop and look around, take in the atmosphere.

Looks a great trip Image

Agreed - we usually do and in fact have made a point to stop more on some previous trips.

Something to do with hamster bladders someone once said but I could never see any hamsters?

Wonderful pics, wonderful trip, great weather,

How about this picture, how amazing is the similarity from James's photo 8 years ago on our trip. Wow,

Day 4 - Andermatt to Bormio......Oberlap - Splugen - Bernina - Livigno....

....again a day of contrasting weather and a grey wet start in Andermatt. A quick check on local webcams and plans to drive Furka/Grimsel/Susten were soon ditched as we decided to head east along Oberlap...

Image

Image

Image

....fuel stop a short while later and a bit of head boiling! .....

Image

Image

Image

Image

....at this point the weather seemed to be clearing and looked like the worst had blown over so we headed back...

Image

....but the higher we climbed it was obvious we were kidding ourselves! :( ....

Image

....so back to plan B...

Image

...no real hardship! 8) ....

Image

Image

....scenery on the way up was spectacular....

Image

...and across the border...

Image

Image

Image

Image

....as we headed down it didn't get any less pretty...sorry for the heavy photo content but these were the most picturesque spots yet :) ...

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

...a nice swimming spot too (or is that pissing!)....

Image

....only problem with this part of the world is that you can hit some slow local traffic....

Image

....great fun following this lot for a while and amusing to watch a few three point turns on some of the tighter switchbacks where boot and slide was the order of the day!....

Image

....they did sound great through the tunnels though! 8) ...

Image

.....bored of being slowed down by the local exotica we made a pitstop for lunch at a rustic eatery in a gorgeous location....lunch was just perfect and proper Italian! :) ....

Image

Image

Image

....on to Bernina for some of the quickest driving of the trip so far....one of the best for sure! 8) ....

Image

Image

Image

Image

.....rapid decents along Bernina and Livigno.....

Image

Image

...by now the initial frustration of a foggy wet start to the day was but a distant memory after a glorious 10 hours or so behind the wheel.

We checked into a great little hotel in Bormio which was to be our base for the next two nights, followed by a delicious meal at another excellent restuarant chosen by Feroz (I think we even went for a run! ).

Day 4 was a good day :)

Cheers,
