Project MFI

Post by impmad2000 »

I have been fighting this for quite a while, and finally given in to temptation. I want to know how MFI pumps work, and there's no better way than to take one apart and rebuild it. I bought the Michael Burgess book, and an old pump, and intend to build a test bench and refurbish this pump.
My main objectives are
1) to understand how it works.
2) Bust some myths about these pumps.
3) to be able to set up a pump according to spec sheets

The rest we'll have to see how it goes. I like an adventure :)

Tim

I have a 2.2E pump, which is missing a couple of bits, would it be of any use to you?

That sounds like it would be very useful thanks Nick.
I do need a few things....
1 set of injectors,
a drive belt,
another drive pulley, either a cam end or another pump one that I can fit on the drive motor.
Anyone got any old ones that they don't trust, or want checking, are so worn that they aren't really fit for the spares collection any more ?
I figure if the injectors check out, I'll return them once I've tested them.

Hi Tim, I should have most things here. We generally fit new pulleys so I will see if any old ones have not been binned yet. I will look tomorrow.

I have now collected a drive motor, electronic speed controller, glass measuring tubes, Rpm meter, fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator. next step is to test motor and speed controller and also the laser rpm meter.

Things are starting to come together. I have a motor and speed controller wired up and running. I can measure the motor shaft speed with a electronic meter. I have the fuel pump, pressure regulator running and producing flow at a controllable pressure. I have the measuring vessels and the space to set it all up. Image
Any luck finding an old drive pulley Alan ?

Is it the cam pulley you want? I have an old one minus the outer flange (but I still have the flange which could be stuck back on). See other thread "what did you do today...."
Let me know.

It's yours if you want it. Can't remember your address, so PM it and I'll put it in a Jiffy bag.

Looking forward to hearing how the testrig build goes Tim.

I too have the Burgess book, and have been working through some issues with my own pump. Have already had the regulator, space cam and flyweights apart, now looking to rebuild the rest. It's a very satisfying thing to work with, once you have the confidence to get stuck into it :)

Yes, Hmm, stalled a bit since summer. Time to pick it back up again. TBH I've been looking for a test fluid but can't find any, so it looks like I need to make a fume cabinet. Oh well ?... Onwards!
