When I was looking for my car, a 2.5 Lux, I was told to check the sills which seems to be a weak point. I wasn't too concerned with power as I wanted it to be suitable for my wife to drive. The one I have is just such a fantastic reliable, drivable and fun car.

If you are looking for the best then you want to look for a S2 which has the 3.0 litre engine and 210bhp.

I'd go for a post-'85 model with the more modern ('oval') dash.

Check for:

- regular cambelt changes
- water pump
- fuel pipe corrosion where it goes over transmission
- engine mounts (heat from the exhaust 'cooks' them

i've just got a 944 S2 cab. absolute delight to drive and i'm glad to be free of the drama of a turbo charged car.

very flattering to my driving ability and i'm enjoying it very much.

mine is a project, and the bits for the cabrio roof are pricey so stay away from a cab unless it's in good nick.

look at the cost of the roof seals:
Windshield frame seal 941.555.546.10 x 1 £410.00
Lateral Top Inner seal left 941.561.385.10 x 1 £270.00
Lateral Top Inner seal right 941.561.386.10 x 1 £270.00
Lateral Top Outer seal left 941.561.387.10 x 1 £270.00
Lateral Top Outer seal right 941.561.388.10 x 1 £270.00
B Pillar Inner Seal left 941.561.519.10 x 1 £325.00
B Pillar Inner seal right 941.561.520.10 x 1 £325.00
B Pillar Outer Seal left 941.561.517.10 x 1 £325.00
B Pillar Outer seal right 941.561.518.10 x 1 £325.00

Cambelt changes are important. Sills rust and the other one that often gets missed is the rear hatch drain tubes sometimes detach allowing water to fill the box area behind the wheels on the inside of the boot. Worth checking for signs of rust here too.

I wouldn't. :)

The early cars have much sweeter steering. Almost like an actual real Porsche.

I think James was referring to this 944 coupe in the PCGB classifieds - not an estate version (good luck in finding one of those !):
