A bit more progress. All electrics are now sorted & most of the bits I need have arrived. I managed to source the correct Hella/Bosch/Ulo parts for the originality points!

Next up is a starter rebuild, swap the horrendous front tyres & stickers, road register it & maybe paint the tinwork.

What's wrong with the front tyres, they look like standard tractor fronts?

The original Junior sizes were 4.00-16 or 4.50-16. These bad boys are 6.00-16 3 rib Goodyears which are the wrong make, size & pattern.

Hopefully I'll be able to sell them for something close to what the correct Continental AS T9s will cost.

I'm undecided about the turf tyres on the back...

Loads of progress...

Now road registered, had the starter rebuilt (for £30), all the lettering & trim is on & the wiring finished.

However I dropped one of the biggest & most schoolboy mechanical boll0cks of my life... The garage door is closed on it & will be for a while until I collect my dummies & other associated mardiness paraphernalia off the floor.

So, about a year ago when I first stripped the 109 I had the head milled to true it up & also had the barrel checked for trueness.

Then when I got them back form the machine shop I reinstalled the barrell to stop dirt getting in the engine, fast forward to 3 weeks ago.

I reinstalled the head, built up the engine & then cranked it over, there was no discernable noise so I fired it up & no problems apart from the run away issue, which I initially put down to a stuck governor.

So, I took it for a run out on Sunday & did about 2 miles, on the return home it was apparent that I was losing control of the engine & the throttle was becoming less responsive. I pulled onto the drive & the engine wouldn't cut out so I reverted to the rag down the air filter & a quick shot of a CO2 fire extinguisher which stopped it.

So... No longer the governor then... I decided to whip the head & barrell off again & found this...



Turns out I'd not aligned the slots in the barrell correctly & boom, the con rod had smashed the bottom of the cylinder & piston. Hence the running away when warm - oil literally p1ssing into the head past the bottom ring.

Anyway all stripped down & the debris in the bottom end cleaned out - it's like the inspection cover was made for this job!

There's a 600 quid package currently en route.

Bugger! Was the barrel 90 or 180 degrees out? Any damage to the con rod? I guess it's probably strong enough to snap both of those with ease....

Ought to be nice and snug with a new barrel & piston though.....

Not sure JW - I'll put the pieces of the jigsaw back togther & let you know! The engine ran & sounded sweet as a nut & if it hadn't runaway I'd have never known. It's hard to imagine how an engine could have sounded any better to be honest - even with the smashed piston & barrel. Based on this I'm assuming the con rod is ok, it's a big old thing so it should be right.

I think I currently stand as the biggest Muppet of the Tractor forum so far...... Rolled one & broke one!

So, new b&p fitted, rebuilt again & was still bl00dy running on.

After speaking with John Hearn I discovered I had an earlier Junior 108 / A111 head & barrel on my tractor. These early heads are a 2 piece casting, with the actual head & rocker box seperating - strike 1 - no gasket. Then it turns out there should be an 0-ring & washer beneath the inlet valve inner spring to stop oil tracking from the rocker box into the inlet tract - strike 2 - no O-ring.

I made these changes & boom - perfect. Starts on the button & runs as sweet as a nut with no smoke - result.

However, after about 5 miles last week I returned & found oil pi$$ing from the bellhousing, so last night I split the tractor & removed the clutch & flywheel assembly to find the most brittle flywheel oil seal I've ever seen. A quick phone call to City Seals & Bearings in Sheffield had me a new one for £9!

If anyone the needs the seal sizes my 109 is 110 i.d 130 o.d & 13mm deep.

Luckily the clutch is quite new so bonus! Hopefully it should be back together tonight & wearing it's new Continental T9 front tyres tomorrow.
