Well , the tax and mot is up next week on the Merc

So... As I can't be arsed going to the post office to tax it or getting new tyres put on for the mot it's time to chop it in for something else .
Fancied another old Merc and as we're bound to get a good summer I thought I'd have a look round for an old SL . Trouble is really good ones are making big money and there's an awful lot of rough old dogs out there it took a while to find something reasonable for not a lot of money .
I was hoping to find a decent 500 but at the money I was willing to spend I decide to
buy on condition and history which meant an early 300 . ...

Off up to the Lakes tomorrow . Hope its sunny .
Cue Jason and Darren , get your 'old man ' jokes in now .

Hey, don't ditch that 24 valve engine. I ran a 300TE-24 sportline for a while: 7200rpm redline! In a merc! It was the most rev happy bus I'd driven in a long while. Brilliant brilliant 6 in line.

Many happy miles!

Had a couple of 124's. coupe 3 litre in bronze the kids called it the Pimp Mobile, sold it to drug dealers from Borehamwood, the scariest sale ever ! And a 200TE estate that I bought for £4k, drove for 12 years and 150,000 odd miles, sold it the day we moved back to Australia for £2800 !!!

Brilliant cars. I have a W210 240 estate and its falling apart with 140k miles on it :-(((

I've done about 500 miles and so far I'm pretty impressed , well screwed together.
It's no sports car obviously and the gearbox doesn't seem to know if it's coming or going but as a cruiser it's great . As Bert says it'll rev for fun once it's rolling .
I think I prefer it with the hardtop on . 8)

Which one have you got Mick ?

Same as yours Russ - 300SL 24 - but a bit earlier @ 1990, FSH, 68k miles, history from day 1.
Deffo a cruising machine. Looks best with hardtop on or top down, looks crap with soft top up
Trying to work out some hoisting arrangement for the hard top - too heavy for my weakling wife and my neighbour is not always to hand

Nice Mick
You're right about the hardtop , bit heavy for the Missus . I've made myself a stand for mine , copied from a design I found on t'internet .

I have just bought this 1992 190E 1.8, 66,000 miles. No rocketship, but very solidly build. Due to get a set of winter tyres this week and be my winter wheels.

A recent acquisition - 1995 Merc SL600 V12 ex-Ron Dennis. Now twenty years old. These are extraordinary value as long as nothing serious goes wrong and you don't look at the fuel gauge too often. A couple of very tiny electrical niggles to sort out on this one and then it's good to go.

Assume an SL600 is quite a rare car ?

Hi James, I think there were over 10,000 SL600s throughout the R129 production run - quite a lot for such an expensive car. I haven't seen the numbers, but I would think less than 10 per cent were RHD? Only one of them was Ron Dennis grey, of course! The rarer car is the SL60, which was an AMG V8 - supposedly only about 50 in RHD.
