Which SWB 911 cage and who to fit it ?

Hi all,
I plan to fit a full cage to my '66 swb 911 rally car. Currently it just has a rear roll bar and after a couple of seasons the chassis is starting to creak and groan under the strain. I need something to stiffen it up and take the strain off the chassis.

I'm interested in any good recommendation about type and/or who to fit one.
Bolted or welded ?
Off the shelf or custom ?
I quite fancy an off the shelf cage bolt in or weld in cage but I do need to tie it in nicely to the A and B pillars to take some of the strain. if anyone has any pictures of clever/neat ways to do this then I'd love to see them ?

Advice welcome ?

Have you spoken to Tuthills as I know they prepare a lot of the SWB Cars for the HRCR Historic Series ? Also Andy Robinson at Robinson Race Cars has done early 911 cages, plus of course Custom Cages near Brackley / Banbury way.

I think in an ideal World I'd like a lightweight tubing bolt in cage with removeable door bars. Don't want to start cutting up the dash or trim to make it fit but on the other hand want to be nice and close and tight and one that doesn't interfere with std door latch, window winders, mirror, etc.
To make sure it doesn't interfere or need trim modification then I'd really like to see one fitted in a swb of whatever one I decide to get. Too late find it interferes when it's being fitted. Been there, done that, paid the price.

I know that Tuthills have been working on a new bolt in cage that doesn't have the 'ugly' large bolts showing as well. Definitely worth a trip down to see their many cars in the workshops (worth a visit anyway to get inspiration) but they are likely mega busy running a dozen or more cars out in Africa at the moment.

Andy Robinson has been mentioned here, and builds ultra neat Pro-Mod drag racers, but also does a lot of historic racing car work - very good engineer.

Perhaps contact Squiredan on here as his car is with Tuthills now, and he had my old white car to which Tuthills did a very neat and close fitting rear cage.

BS Motorsport put the cage in my car and it is very well fitted and makes a noticeable difference to rigidity. It is welded in with door. Are etc but I am sure they can fabricate to your spec.
The force is strong in this one ......

Andrew you may be able to kill two birds with 1 stone as I heard that the ex body chap from Tuthills is renting a corner of the garage from Custom Cages in Daventry (someone that worked on my Landie is a mate of his)

My suggestion would be to make sure it's FIA-compliant Andrew - will increase the uses that you and/or a future owner can put the car to

My money would be on Andy Robinson also. He did a fantastic job on the 356 which has transformed it. I'd also think carefully about what Robert said: an FIA compliant cage is important for eligibility and I'd no bother about bolt in door bars - the reality is you'll never use them. If you're putting a cage in a car for rallying or racing there's no point compromising it by putting a bolt in cage in, in my opinion. Speak with Andy (or other highly competent specialists) as this is not something to compromise and there's a lot to factor in and the regs are constantly evolving, as I found when I spoke with Andy. He sits on MSA inspection committee for safety so knows his beans. Hope that helps. Cheers Steve

Hi andy,
I fitted a weld in club mans custom cage to my 72 lwb, it was all set and profiled by custom cages and just left me to position in car and weld in by mig at home, it was a relative straight forward job, but they will weld them in for you at a price. Worth a look on there web site as they do a few different styles depending on what you want. Also Tuthills would be worth a chat re specs and future proofing your cage re tube size etc for competition. If you are competing with the car make sure you are allowed to tie it into the body shell at A&B pillars cos if you can't /aren't allowed the scrutineers will fail the car.
