Recommendations for rear RS lightweight carpet set?

Post by 964RS »

Going to buy a rear set for my RSR to try and reduce the noise from deafening to just very very loud

Has anyone any experience of these or can recommend a supplier?

Southbound supplied mine and I was pleased with that - and Dave Nunn (?) was very helpful with advise.

Another thumbs up for southbound. He also did a great job in embroiding carrera rs on the rear carpet. Very helpful when it coming to fit as I've never fitted any before and there seemed to loads of carpet. Not the cheapest but top quality.

Southbound did the interior in my car and I think it is pretty good compared to some of the alternatives I have seen.

Scalino65 did the rear of his 68S for the same reason and might have a view as he checked a few others out. I don't think it made much difference to the sound according to him but looks better.

Cheers Feroz - sent him a message also.

I need to reduce noise levels....I'm not concerned about how it looks. If it looks great but has no effect then it will be a waste in my mind. :(

Then you'll need some sound deadening material installed first and then carpet.

Jason, I don't think just fitting carpet will have much effect on noise ( presume it it just painted metal at the moment?) you might be better off looking at dynamat or similar first.

I have been installing audio in cars for years.
Dynamat is a good product but it is expensive. the "lite" version is lighter but it is even dearer.
This stuff is just as good IMHO

The parcel shelf, the transmission tunnel between the rear seats and the seat buckets also resonate a fair bit all of these can be dampened and covered with standard carpet

You don't need loads of dampening material to get sound down to a reasonable level but you do need the material just carpet will do very little to the sound.

Adding some mass to the panel will reduce the levels of resonance a great deal, then your carpet goes set over the top so it looks "Porsche"

I have done this in my fathers RS rep and it works a treat

Thanks for this it looks really useful. Lots of people suggesting carpets alone will make little difference so I guess I will need to invest in something like this - is it easy to fit?

I need to reduce it quite a bit.

This is the noise levels inside the cabin.....averaging 104db and hit 112db!!

Too much for long euro hoons which seem to make up a lot of the cars annual mileage these days....

Well considering a 964RS with cup pipe/drilled box is 80-90 in the cabin I don't find 112db very quiet! :(

It's actually the same level as if you put your head 6ft from my tailpipe at 5000 revs....then keep it there for a few hours

Jason ,

Excuse me if this sounds a bit thick but on a purely practical level how would you go about fitting the sound deadening and carpet in the back ? I can't remember if your car's cage is welded or bolted in .
I know I'd like to do a similar thing in my new car but I couldn't see how I'd physically get in to do it unless I get someone considerably nimbler and smaller than myself in there , take the back screen out ?

Mine is just a half cage Russ and its bolted in.

As the seats will be coming out for your lovely new brackets that would be a good time to be doing it...
