Garage restoration!

Post by Gary71 »

Well not really restoration, but sorting it out. New flooring going down and steel box on order to remake the bench and a trolley for the tool box (rather than the TV stand it's on at the moment!)

The inspiration:

The start:

I struck lucky on a incorrect order of Porcelain commercial grade tiles and now have 32m2 of them for £250 delivered to my door. The adhesive will cost another £200, but still cheaper than any other option and far more suitable for my kind of garage use than plastic tiles.

Only trouble is what to do with all the junk/bikes/car whilst I do it! :)

I'm about to go through this after flooding ruined all my existing rubber floor tiles so will be very interested in following what you do.

Think I may go with the same type of flooring again....not sure. Garage is over 40m2 so I need quite a bit.

Be good to have it looking all neat and tidy - I really only use it for the cars and storage....not much 'work' goes on in mine.

I'd like to get some useful affordable cabinets/shelving to make the place all tidier too if you or anyone has any thoughts on this?

Good luck Gary...keep pics coming :)

A few years back now I got a deal of run out tiles from ecotole to do my double garage.

They still have them occasionally

More than £250 though but very tough and idiot proof for me to install. Ikea cabinets on one side...

+1 for cheap ikea cabinets, keep all paint tins/car polish/bits and bobs in them, all push bikes and garden tools are on racks off the floor
Would love to tile the garage, but 72m2 of tiles is way down the shopping list just now!

...BUT look at the size of it! :)

A little bit more work required than in mine ;)

I've now cleaned up one side and spent far too long laying tiles in lines working out where everything will end up. Unfortunately I'm off to Germany in a few hours so can't start the tiling yet as it needs to be done so I can get the car back in the same day (although on the other side!)

I have a day off on Wednesday so the plan is to hit the current 'car' side early then leave that to dry for a couple of hours whilst I go and watch the Tour of Britain that comes with a couple of miles of the village, grout in the afternoon then move all the junk across making space for the car on the other side.

Give it a few days to harden before I put a car on it and I'll be able to tile the other side on Saturday, move the junk back and voila; new shiny garage.

However best laid plans and all that... :)

Think about an electric underfloor heating mat around the area you work in, wont heat the whole garage but will make it a little nicer in the depths of winter. don't cost a lot and easy to control.

Think yourself lucky you have walls and a roof, spent the weekend doing this.

You are all making my job look easy :)

First stage this morning marking out:

Next job is to cut all the side tiles then get the glue out and work square by square back towards the camera...

I just need to get the kids to school now though! :)

No matter how many times I've gone over it I keep finding lumps in the floor so the bolster chisel will stay in use during tiling!

I thought I'd gone posh by painting my garage floor for my 914. Even with that down market finish I was pretty fed up when the car leaked oil and I splashed Zambezi green paint on it!

As I posted earlier... best laid plans and all that... God knows how people do this for a day job. I'm completely trashed after 9 hours of backbreaking slog (with a little bike ride in the middle!) and I still haven't done one half yet. Anyhow the car is back in the other side and I can contemplate tackling the rest of this side and moving all the stuff over during the week before the full on other side and grouting at the weekend.
