Speeding ticket. Well what's all this then?

Post by Dion »

Hi all,
Question. The nice constables in Cumbria have notified the car rental
facility that I was speeding. Allegedly doing 35mph in a 30mph zone.
Fair enough. The rental sent me notification that ticket will be sent directly to
me maybe at reduced rate per council?
Any experience in this. What might the
infraction cost me? This occurred in
July. Prolly on the way to visiting Rich
of TurboThomas fame. Any way first offense
ever in UK, after 3 trips covering
more than 1000 miles each time.
Odds caught me up.
Cheers,Dion

3 points and anything up to £60 fine? If you have no points on your license then it'll make little difference to insurance, etc.

You might be offered a speed awareness course if they do it. Mine recently cost me £92, half a day off work and no points. You will also more than likely be levied with a charge from the hire company in notifying you of the offence, a colleague at work just had it from a hire car is Spain.

I see your address is the USA, so do you have a uk license?. If you only have your USA license then what can they do points wise anyway.

If your a nice man pay the fine or tell them to come to the states and collect in cash!

Thanks for the info everyone. No I don't have a UK license, just US
issue. It was a camera that nabbed me, wasn't pulled over.
Ok ,will await ticket in post. 5mph, No wiggle room from
the camera cops. Hell, in my township they dont even look at you for 10
over unless you are reckless or in a schoolzone.
Thanks again. Now I have an idea of what to expect.
Cheers, Dion

Just sit tight. I can't see it being pursued in the US.

I may be wrong though!

Could be that the rental firm ends up paying and then takes money from you (I guess you used a card to pay for the rental?). Most rental small print talks of the customer being responsible for all fines.

But, having said that, I've been stopped four times for speeding in So Cal and let off each time as the paperwork involved isn't worth the effort.

As John says sit tight, I doubt that the DVLA will/can pursue you for £60 and they can't fine the car rental company and expect them to pass the fine on.

I was in this situation about two years or so ago i.e. speeding fine issued on a rental car which I had rented in the UK on my Irish licence. The rental company charged an "admistration fee" of circa £5 on my credit card for handling the notice from the UK police (DVLA?) and I never heard anything further again...

In cases like this they generally sell the debt on to a third party for say a tenner, who then bombard you with official notices. If you are planning to visit the uk again , then I'd pay it directly, as you will no doubt be on a database when they next scan your passport (funny how it is easier to find a speeder coming into the country than an illegal immigrant.......)

I go to Italy quite a lot, and always pay their fines (mainly for not understanding the "locals only town centre scam" that they seem to love!

In Norway a few years ago, I went through a toll which was an automatic paying system, I couldn't change lanes so just went through. I got a fine request and a nice photo of my impreza through the door, so I sent them a letter stating how it was a pure accident and it had marred my otherwise fantastic holiday to the most beautiful country....it worked, they sent a note back saying they were glad I enjoyed Norway and that the fine was cancelled

Thanks for all the insight everyone. Interesting to see how
the different countries operate. Yes Keith, put the rental on the credit card.
There was a £35 admin cost noted on the letter. Will await
Cumbria's official word:) I feel like I should have gone faster
to justify the paperwork:) Have a good day everyone.

in the UK , 12 points & we're out ( banned, unless you can argue to the court why you shouldn't be ) .. each offense generally is 3 points & kept on your licence for 3 years ( then removed) .

different levels of speeding attract different punishments . You also get points for other things like using a mobile phone, etc

in many places they are correct to monitor speed ( built up areas, near schools etc etc )

a lot of locations it is milked as a cash cow

Bikers keep killing themselves in North Yorkshire , so the 'elected' police comissioner has decided she should have 3 mobile camera vans that look like camper vans ..... sat in the middle of the Yorkshire dales / moors on empty stretches of nice roads ( not a footpat or walker in sight) or sitting on bridges above 70 mph dual carriageways zapping people who might be trundling along just over

In the old days you had traffic cops who would stop the offenders & educate at the same time as issuing warnings etc

i agree with Hot 66, if a cop stops you you have a chance of a telling off, and just to clear the record the camera safety vans are not manned by Cumbria Police Officers, but Civi's working in a road safety partnership with the council / goverment and have nothing to do with Cumbria Constabulary, other than they rent office space and park the vans at Penrith HQ......mark...

Just ignore it. They won't persue you in USA and check rental conditions that say £35 as that's a joke.

My wife has been done twic in the last month by cameras....both at 36 in a 30.

It's a total joke and just a money raising exercise.

The headline in Nottingham Post yesterday was that there is one small stretch of road in Nottingham that is 470m long which has raised over £1/4million in fines in the last 4 WEEKS from notices being issued!
