Any one have an ideas on how to fix this?

Post by 912uk »

My 54 Steering wheel ring was damaged by the shipping agent either the tow truck driver or shippers them selves as it was mint before it left John's house as it has been standing in his garage for 28 years!

So looking forward any suggestions.. it's not the best metal in the world and It's more a decoration than a working item.

This is Pig metal if I am right?

Paint wise I was just going to go to the local paint supplier and try and get a match the rim will polish up nice.

horn push wise I think i am just going to get a moon and sun.. unless any one has one.

The old phrase was 'Pot Metal' a zinc alloy of questionable strength and could be porous. Does the broken surface look like an Aero Bar of chocolate?

I think this cannot be soldered or even welded, but worth finding a real specialist welder and ask.

This metal was extensively used on all cars for door handles/grill badges and the like so you will find someone for sure to fix it so it can be plated again.

There are a number of specialist adhesives used in the aircraft industry - usually aimed at aluminium alloys. Provided it doesn't come under excessive loading, one of those adhesives might do the trick. I think most of them are epoxy (various grades, araldite being a household version) or cyanoacrylate (used in superglue).

Hi Mark, you never know how this kind of material will weld until you arc up on it, from experience you may be able to fuse it but it would be pretty weak.
If it was mine and it was being painted then I'd glue it, you would ideally use 3M 9323, the stuff they use to bond aluminium chassis together.

Another Lumiweld candidate me thinks. It may be [possible to make a steel insert and bond it in out of site across the break to put sme strength in? Happy to have a look if you aren't in a rush?

I repaired a broken rib and 6061 alu tip spar of an aircraft wing with Hysol 9430. Amazing stuff to work with. There are dozens of grades of epoxy adhesive out there - I bet there's one specifically for bonding pot metal.

Work out a way to clamp it together really hard first!

No idea on proper repair and no insult toward your car but
I just received in the mail a catalog from "Airhead parts"
in California for all things VW. Noticed a horn ring so similiar, states
OEM quality for $10. If it was proper diameter and colour could be a
quick fix till your original one was restored. Just an idea.

Sorry wrong list, horn ring listed @
$32.50. I realize it's a 356. Just saw the similarities.
Fingers crossed it could be an economical solution.
Till its properly mended. Here's where I found it:

Would be great if it turns out to be same fitment. Goodluck.

Mark. Just curious if you know if they are same diameter/fitment.
Just trying to educate myself with the 356's. Goodluck.
