Sorry to hi-jack the thread but I have news that along with my 66 UK RHD car there are another two 66 RHD cars in Northern Ireland! I'm talking to others on tis forum to find out more and will post when info is complete.

my car MY66 303567 - UK RHD
2nd car MY66 302644 - UK RHD - first 911 delivered to NI.
3rd car NY66 304484 - UK RHD

Does the "another two 66 RHD cars in NI" include mine ? - 304118

Nope - that makes 4no 66 RHD in NI - pretty impressive!

First of all, sorry John that your thread got hijacked. But it has pointed out the need for an effort to get things sorted out regarding the SWB cars.
I had a go at summerising the 1965 year cars, noting the difference between MY1965 and MY 1966. I relied heavily on LGK6D's existing info and the data that Ian McLeod had made available to me.

And I got backchat saying it was a lot of PCGB talk!

So I stopped.

So, if folk want to follow this sort of thread then how does one get a site started? If we want a record of each years survival/demise - then where will anyone look.
Yes,Robin, a sticky is needed. Can we do that Bootsy? How do we do it?
Then comes the detail. Are we just going to record the remaining RHD vehicles (and the known 'deceased' cars).
Are the 912 guys happy with their registry or do they want a rhd offshoot or do they already have such a site[*]

It seems we are talking of 76 'Normal' 911 RHD cars produced in total Jan 1965- July 1967 plus 1968 cars of which I know nothing bar the one I parted out!!![*] .

I made a list of 1965 produced cars noting the difference twixt 65MY and 66MY production and I will act for '66 MY cars but I would ask for someone else to cover 1967. Maybe Mike would help with 67 but is there someone else who would tackle the 1968? And the 912s?

They could all come under a new heading of SWB RHD Information.

What do folk think?

Thanks to Darren (Darren65), Mike (210bhp) and murph2309 for steering me to Jonathan Parr. He took on this basket case of a steering wheel. I am still astonished at what he accomplished. I will let the pictures tell the story. Jonathan found a similar wheel to provide the leather. He recovered the other wheel which is now available - from a 1966 911 thanks to (Robert Barrie one-two)

Started in situ:


A quick clean up reveals a lot of rust:


very corroded chrome ring and base metal but not bad leather? horn push:


Wow - is this recoverable?


Inside not so bad:

But rubber underneath is not bad:

Tomorrow I will post result of Jonathan's efforts.

The Chrome ring was very delicate. Jonathan hand sanded it and found he could get it into good enough condition to rechrome it without the retaining tabs being compromised:

then using a 3d printer he formed a backing piece to replace the decayed foam filler:



The result:



Carefull filing of the finger serrations and Jonathan managed to recover pretty close to the original



As for that rusty set of spokes and behind the scene:



The replacement leather has a lovely patina and careful handling and stitching produce this result:



And as for those rusty spokes, a lot of elbow grease and several coats of paint....



And what a nice motivation to get on with the rest of this job!!

John was a lovely character...I said it at the time of his passing and I still think it now...of all the people I have met fleetingly ...as I do...in doing the wheel restorations John somehow made more of a impression...i have absolutely no idea why but I do find myself reminded of him from time to time.....I hope someone did take on his quest to restore that car

Hi - this is one of John's children. Just checking on the thread to see if the new owner provided any updates. To ensure the proper care and attention was paid to the vehicle the family parted ways with the car and donor in 2017 to a Porsche enthusiast who has restored multiple old Porsches. Unfortunately, we have been unable to obtain an update since the sale. And with COVID we just hope they are well. If we do receive an update we will post it here. Thank you for your kind words about our father.

Thank you for bringing this news to update the thread about this special car. It was perhaps a bitter/sweet moment to let the car go. I’m sure it wasn’t an easy decision.
I’m sure all on DDK wish you and your families all the best for the future.
